Blogger is telling me the following string has invalid characters.  Can someone help me?

You're missing the </img> before the </a>. Maybe that's it.

Actually she isnt missing the </img> tag.

<img /> is correct xhtml/html5/xml syntax for a self-enclosed tag that doesnt have a seperate end tag, and prior to xhtml there was no close tag to an <img> tag at all.

That tag is possibly still the problem though... If Blogger is a bit old it may not be correctly recognising the <img /> syntax and want just the old fashioned <img> tag.

Yeah, that looks like itd be the problem. Strange error, though, to say invalid characters when it actually means unexpected syntax.
