The "Atheism is a Religion" statement has been  something of a standard allegation among right-wing pundits for years now.

It's a part of the strategy of repeating a falsehood over and over again until the flock believes it.

Hannity can have a guest or caller who destroys that statement on Monday, and he'll just go on repeating it on Tuesday.

I've seen Bill O do the same thing.

On this point they are impenetrable to reason. I' am fairly certain that they KNOW they are full of BS, but they'll still stand by the statement because it makes their opposition furious.

You know, according to her definition and her behavior in that clip, "calling atheism a religion" is a religion.

Yeah I can make up any definition for anything I want too.

OK, now bring the argument to completion. Mention your degree.

It's 100% true, lib! In related news, I am apparently a polytheist of both the Mariners and the Seahawks.

I don't believe Kennedy Nation exists as a real person.  Is that a religion?

Do you adhere to that belief with zeal and fervor?

I deny with all my fervor that anyone that clueless could be a real person, so I guess so.  Hey, if atheism is a religion, can atheists get tax exempt status?  Yay for no taxes!

Whenever I hear "Atheism is a religion too," it just makes the speaker sound like they're saying, "See?  They're just as lame as us!"

I don't understand why it's so important for many religious people to define atheism as a religion. What need does that satisfy for them? What question does it answer?

It's also baffling how they can't grasp the simple notion of not believing in gods/deities, or anything broadly defined as supernatural. I get the feeling that, much like their own religion, they have never bothered to actually learn what atheism is. They could read the first paragraph on Wikipedia and be done.

As science slowly but surely erodes away more supernatural beliefs, religious believers feel their special privileged place in society coming under threat, so they have to level the playing field by placing a handicap on the atheist side to give them a head start in the race.  It's just a way of cheating to win the argument.  It's easier to win an argument if you can misrepresent it rather than present the facts.

There is also this thing that some fundamentalist Christians do where they claim that Christianity is NOT a religion.  They talk about how Christianity is better than "The Religions".

There is also a thing that some mainstream Christians do, where they give up "Religion" for Lent.  Sometimes they just mean that they are not giving up anything for Lent, sometimes they mean that they are giving up all of the negative things that are associated with religion (whatever they decide those may be).

You also have to admit, that although the lack of belief in supernatural entities or forces in clearly not a religion, there are some atheists who do have a religious devotion to their belief, and interact with groups of like-minded people in a manner that would -- to an objective outside observer -- be indistinguishable from a religious person interacting with their church, synagogue, mosque, or whatever.
