The Thing (John Carpenter's Version)

have you seen the other version, and decided it doesn't deserve to be on such an exclusive list? (the omission is unclear)

I've never heard of anyone not liking it.

make sure you get the Director's Cut -- the other version infamously has a spoiler-ridden narration at the beginning.

Roger Ebert loves this movie so much he helped to do the Commentary.

not that I know of. (I know I've seen certain Star Wars movies, but at an age too young to really remember the sequence of events. it's possible I'd remember scenes from this movie.)

saw just the intro the other day
(click to show/hide)
, and now it's not just a movie on someone's list but one I'm very much looking forward to watching it. ;D

Primer is an excellent movie.  It is clever, complex and very interesting and you need to be stone cold sober to follow it but it is highly rewarding , even after repeated viewings. Techy people who went through the dotcom bubble will really relate to it.
The fact it was done on a teeny weeny budget with unknown actors is highly impressive.
If you watch it, grasp all the time lines and then your brains melt don't blame me, there are worse ways to become a vegetable.
(After watching it and still not following the various threads there is good plotline diagram on the web but you need a huge printer to do it justice.)

And an old list from 1999 was:
Blade Runner - gets my vote for believable setting
Appocolype Now - believable setting I'd rather not be in
A Clockwork Orange - nice setting and people :)
Romper Stomper - best closing credits of a movie
2001: A Space Oddyssy - unbelievable effects for it's time
Christiane F - Excellent music , realistic atmosphere
Animal House - funny movie, funny people
The Graduate - interesting plot
The Wall - too deep to understand at one sitting, or two, or three..
Spawn (Directors cut)
Dark City
The Matrix

I'd add a lot more Rubber Reality movies these days, being a fave genre.

It's hard to say anything about Primer without giving too much away.  Suffice it to say, plan on watching it twice; but you won't regret having to.

Another under-appreciated film in the the-less-you-know-about-it-ahead-it-of-time–the-better-off-you-are genre is House of Games.  If you haven't seen this film, just see it.  Don't ask why, because it's best if don't know anything going into it.  Just see it.  If you don't like it, you can start a thread about how bad my taste in movies is.

I like Dogville a lot. It was quite inspiring when I was in film school. In a very general sense that is - I didn't go out and film a woman being abused on a stage with outlines. But it did cast off the idea of limitations in a very fun way. I don't watch it, though I have a copy. Probably will one day. (Probably not actually) But I'd still consider an excellent movie. There are some very beautiful scenes for something so stripped bare.

Primer - I'd forgotten about that one. I enjoyed that a lot. Could definitely see it again, I've completely forgotten how it goes.

I'll give House of Games a try too.

On the subject. Another favourite is The Game, the Fincher movie. It's very much a simple movie (like Panic Room, or Girl With...), not on the level of Fight Club or Social Network or Se7en. But it's still brilliant, and a lot of fun. Very easy to watch.
