Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind  (2004)
Shutter Island  (2010)
Inception  (2010)

any of those worth seeing?

Hell yes.

Eternal Sunshine should be on my list. It's incredible. As is Inception.

Shutter Island. meh. maybe once.

I agree completely except you don't really need to see Shutter Island.  Its ok, so if you have nothing else to do or watch, go ahead.

Good thread, I've added some movies to my "must see" list as well.

Some of my favorites that have not been mentioned:

The Princess Bride (how the hell am I the first one to put this one out there?? greatest movie dialogue ever)
Snatch
Airplane!
Total Recall
Predator (shockingly, ALL of the sequels are worth watching too)
The Incredibles (makes it into my top movies for its soundtrack, but it's a good Pixar film regardless)
Silence of the Lambs
Amadeus
THE PRINCESS BRIDE, GODDAMMIT

Favorites that have already been mentioned:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Dr. Strangelove
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Casablanca
The Usual Suspects
O Brother Where Art Thou

Strange women lying in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government.

The Producers.  I consider it Mel Brooks' funniest and best movie; Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder are perfect.

You're a lunatic.  Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are clearly superior.

I actually searched the thread for the word "princess" when I didn't see it after the first read; weird. Either way, that's a relief.

in any case, your emphatic post bumps it up a notch or two :) (I don't know if it's my kind of movie, but it has to deserve to go ahead of the crap end of genres I like and rewatches of shit I half-like)

I disagree. They are both hilarious.  The Producers is funnier.

GodSlayer - you havent actually seen Princess Bride?

I don't know whether to pity you or envy you, so I'll do both.

definitely bump it to the top. It's the most likable great movie I know. I've never met anyone who didn't like it. And almost everyone loves it.

the reviews make me think it's not really for me, right now.

couldn't hurt to leave a few 'movies worth seeing' for the rest of my life, so that the coming years aren't filled with abject disappointment. right?

I've also not seen:
Full Metal Jacket
Fargo
Reservoir Dogs
True Grit
Chinatown
and a few others I thought might be mentioned.

but its definitely for everyone.

Its so unlike anything else. that if you think you're not into fantasy, or whatever reason you find for putting off, you'd be wrong to do so.

This isn't a one time thing. so you can watch it today, and still have something to fill the dark lonely hours of the years to come. It can be watched infinite times wihout losing its charm

-as for your last list.

i'd say true grit is the easiest to recommend. Fargo is a classic, but not for everyone. reservoir dogs - the same. ive never stayed awake through Chinatown - but i intend to

the comments that put me off:
the absurdities sometimes forced and obvious.

The Wizard of Oz of our generation

one of the greatest date rentals of all time.

A film...built...around one message...: "True love is the greatest thing in the world."

It's a...look at the nature of true love.

I prefer something rather more antithetical to any of this, like Requiem for a Dream.
