Lyrics you got wrong.
« on: Feb 01, 2012, 07:10:07 PM »
What song's lyrics did you get wrong?

One that comes to my mind--since I just heard it on a commercial-- is from a song (that I absolutely can't stand) by Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing". When I first heard this as a child, I though it was, "I believe in milk holes, praise the lord, you sexy thing."

It made no sense to me. "What the fuck are milk holes? Oh, Miracles..."

I can't think of anymore atm, but I know there are a lot of songs where I got the lyrics wrong.

So, what song's lyrics did you get wrong? The funnier the better!

Forever, I didn't know what the hell "leaving me looking like a duck on ice" was doing in the Bee Gees' "Jive Talking."  I finally looked it up.

"Leaving me looking like a love-struck fool."  How did I get "duck on ice" from that?
"There's only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you've got to be kind."  Kurt Vonnegut
"You can bet your last money it's all gonna be a stone gas, honey."  Don Cornelius
'"Hello! You're a beautiful woman!  Do you want to meet?  I want you!"  some Latvian guy on a dating site

It's funny, because I've noticed that my made up lyrics make some songs better. Then when I find out what the real lyrics are, the song just doesn't have that same effect.

Another one is from Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks". I thought they were saying, "... faster than my pocket." Even though, "... faster than my bullet" is correct and makes more sense.

I never heard it as such but I really, really prefer these lyrics to Stairway to Heaven, which I only first heard as a mis-pronounce like 20 years ago:

Quote from: NOT Zep
And if you listen very hard
The Jew will bother you a lot

It's like "Whoa shit, Zep are total anti-Semites." It's a way better revelation than:

Quote
And if you listen very hard
The  truth will come to you at last

Blinded by the light.

What the fuck does that mean?

I finally, one day, looked up the lyrics.  They make sense...but it sure doesn't sound like he's saying "revved up like a deuce".

'Jeremy smoking glass again' by Pearl Jam makes a lot more sense when you realise it's 'Jeremy spoke in class today'.

"Sad But True" by Metallica I heard as "Sad Patrol"

I pictured MIB types, patrolling the streets, issuing sad upon the world.

Oh maaaaan, that is THE lyric. In fact, I used to sing that line *properly* and my former supervisor used to be all like 'HEY THAT IS INAPPROPRIATE FOR WORK plz sing it again'.

Drunken workplace karaoke, I assume.

Related to your earlier this-was-somebody-else's-mondegreen-but-I-like-it post, the lyrics of Dwight Yoakam's "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" are properly "I've got heartaches in my pocket, I've got echoes in my head."

But ever since somebody else shared how they misheard this, I can hear nothing but "I've got pickles in my ears," which is a much more awesome lyric.

This isn't mine, but my sister thought that The Coasters were singing "Boys on Highway" instead of "Poison Ivy."  Not even sure what "Boys on Highway" was even supposed to mean...

Mine was George Harrison singing, "I've got my mind set on you" -- or as I heard it, "Back up I might sit on you."

And who can forget The Rolling Stones' immortal classic, "Empresario"?  Sure, you might know it as, "If you start me up..."
"The power of Christ compels you!"

'There's a bathroom on the right' for 'there's a bad moon on the rise', which I understand is pretty common

'All I ever wanted, all I ever needed is him in my arms' for 'here in my arms' which is also very common

But the one I seem most alone in is from Alanis Morrisette. For the longest time, I thought it was 'it's a green light when you've already braked' instead of 'it's a free ride when you've already paid.' I like mine better.

And I'm gonna give you up
And I'm gonna let you down
And I'm gonna run around
And desert you

And I'm gonna make you cry
And I'm gonna say goodbye
And I'm gonna tell a lie
And hurt you
I expect to pass through this world but once;
any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now;
let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

Actual lyric: "Whoop there it is."

My Uncle: "Whoop badass."

My Sister: "Whoop Bayenis." (What?)
