So are diehard Star Wars fans like fundamentalist Christians and diehard Star Trek fans are the militant New Atheists?

I think Star Trek fans are just as religious in their zeal as Star Wars fans.  Wouldn't an atheist in this metaphor be someone who dislikes all scifi until someone presents them with convincing evidence that it is good? (Deists would be those who only like TOS and/or ANH/ESB)

Well Christian apologists often say the New Atheists are just as "bad" as the Christian fundamentalists, so I thought it fit as an analogy. especially if we're talking the hardcore Trekkies.

Nah.

To my eternal shame I've frequented both "trek" and "wars" forums in the past.  No longer, thank FSM.

I always thought there were far more folks who blindly follow the gospel according to George Lucas than Roddenberry.

I find "trek" fans are able to objectively look at something "trek" and say "that is good/that's not good" more measuredly than a "wars" fan is able to look at something "wars" and say "that is good/that's not good".

Of course, I was frequenting Star Wars forums when the prequel movies were in the process of being released, so the fanboy frenzy was much higher.  Maybe now with a few years separation, Star Wars fans are more able to look objectively and recognize such things as terrible script, terrible acting, etc....

Well.  There it is.

I was most active in fandom during the 80s and 90s, before the internet, when we had to actually leave the house and go to conventions once or twice a month.  Back then, Trek fans were infinitely more "religious" than Wars fans, and since I don't count people who like the prequels as Star Wars fans, from my perspective they still are.

What is it? Is it a spaceship? It looks a little bit like a lightsaber, but not an instantly recognizable design like Luke's or Vader's.

The I is the sonic screwdriver from Doctor Who, and the S is from the Farscape logo.

The 'i' is the sonic screwdriver, the dot is a Stargate.
