Even more than that - The analogy also requires you to have heard, from your parents or other authoritative figures, something about eternal pain and suffering awaiting those who don't think Martin Short was in The Three Amigos. And then that you don't think too much about it throughout the rest of your life.

How much this is preached depends on the denomination. But yes, you can tell people about the situation in places like Darfur and in their mind it is just too distant from them for it to be much of a consideration. Do you people not hang around the general populous? The people that I work with are far more interested in what happened in the last episode of the Big Bang Theory or the sports game or a restaurant opening. Religion and thinking about it is just not all that important to them. Those people really do not concern me. It is the people that do think about it often and spout hate and craziness that is concerning.
common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

What does it mean, then, to be a Christian?

Of course people can call themselves whatever they want but this question was asked toward the start of Christianity and they came up with the Creed listing out the fundamental edicts that a person must believe to be a Christian. Of course you can reject that list but if you had to point to one thing that would be it...

You get "Christians" or Christians, whatever, that believe in Jesus but claim to reject Paul and the Church, they sometimes call themselves followers of Early Christians or something like that, some even say Jesus wasn't God, just a prophet. When I refer to Christians I'm referring to the tradition, from the founding the Church, what some refer to as "Nicene Christianity".
