Laptop Display Issue
« on: Feb 18, 2012, 03:22:38 PM »
I bough recently, three months ago, a replacement laptop
The display suddenly goes very dim. When I open and close, it comes back on but only stay on for a brief period.
Is that most likely the display?

From my very limited experience it sounds like your power-saver is kicking in. You should be able to set how long it remains idle before going dim. If you've set it longer and it's still going dim then maybe you are having battery trouble?

On AC Power

Change the dim timer for "on battery" and on AC power to different values. Make the "on battery" timer less than the AC power timer, then time how long it takes to dim. Then swap the values and time it again. Let us know the results.

It seems to vary in time, I went to always on for both settings, never dimming the display but still does not seem to help

Just a thought, a few laptop manufacturers add an unnecessary control panel application that can interfere with system power settings.  You might want to check the All Programs list under the Start Menu and see if any such application is listed.   If so, try to make the adjustments there.

Would not effect the computer in the setup / CMOS

Backlight is broken or the switch is not functioning correctly which I suspect is the cause of your problem. I took apart and put my laptop back together with the help of the engineers manual for my specific model, it was really annoying and I had to make notes for each stage. I think newer laptops are LED but my old ones use lamps, if it's a lamp it'll be near the hinge, and the switch is visible on most laptops I've seen. I've seen lamps being faulty (on Samsung TVs) but never witnessed one breaking, it's usually something else that goes first, so I'd check the switch first, see if it's functioning. I have no idea how to repair it.

Heard a few suggestions of the inverter.  I have an inverter under order from E-Bay.  . .We might mean the same thing with switch and inverter.
Presidents Day means it will take an extra day at least.
If it turns out to not be the inverter, I will order a new display
I replaced a display on a previous laptop.

No, I was referring to the mechanical switch. Apparently the inverter is something else that could fail, but without a replacement it's hard to say whether it's that or the lamp. If it isn't the inverter you might want to try to get a lamp.

Talking about the switch when you open and close the display?
I let the laptop sit for several hours before turning it on (I wanted to test it with an external monitor) and it actually took a good 20 minutes before failing. I think I can say that something is heating up inside the display.
I had no problems with the external monitor so it is not the video card at least

If it's the temperature getting higher it would be the inverter. If it's that then I don't think that the inverter is necessarily broken, it may just have a bad connection, you would also be able to tell by the laptop feeling hotter than usual near the bottom of the LCD. If it's not a bad connection causing the excess heat then a new inverter would go the same way, stop functioning when it gets too hot. I've fixed a TV that had a known issue with the contacts on the lamp when it was too cold, but there wouldn't be a problem with it getting too hot without other symptoms.

I am not sure exactly what you mean? Do you mean, inside the LCD unit or do you mean in the main body of the laptop.
In the main body, I am pretty sure that the ribbon cable attached under the keyboard so not really all that near the inverter.
My next option, if the inverter is not the solution, would probably be to replace the entire display unit.

Have you tried hooking it up to an external display and seeing if the problem still persists on that monitor?  It would at least rule out the physical screen as the issue if it happens there too.
