I'm not sure what you mean by "rogue factions" of Cerberus.

In ME1 Cerberus popped up everywhere as an organisation of essentially pro-human extremists, responsible for torture, human and humanoid-alien experimentation, wiping out entire colonies...

In ME2 suddenly they were ok to work with, because the Cerberus guys that were deplorable maniacs in the first game are explained away as "rogue cells", or excused because they didnt know the Rachni they were experimenting on were sentient, or all sorts of excuses.

The most agregious problem is the Sole Survivor background you can pick for Shepard. You can find out in ME1 that this was another Cerberus plan, where they deliberately fed the patrol to the Thresher Maws and wiped out every last one of Shep's squad mates. As far as Im aware in ME2 you cant even mention this.

Quote
The good Geth thing was.. meh.. but I think it added a lot of depth to the world of the game, I'd rather there be "good" Geth and "bad" Geth than just uniformly "bad" Geth. That's too one-dimensional to me.

I can see how it could provide depth, I just really disliked the retconn. The Geth in ME1 were presented as a hivemind AI that was dangerous and attacking the Citadel races. They had a good backstory about how the Quarians had grown fearful of them and forced them out, making them hateful. They had a monolithic mind, but were a sympathetic villian.

Suddenly in ME2, just as with Cerberus, you find out that the Geth youve been fighting arent the real Geth, the real Geth are actually not bad guys and the ones you have been fighting are just a rogue faction.

If they had had those things in the story from the beginning it would have most likely been fine but the sudden changes with no foreshadowing, in quite similar ways for both Cerberus and the Geth, felt lazy to me and also undervalued the ME1 story. Cerberus, the Geth, and the Husks created by the Geth make up the vast majority of the enemies in ME1 and suddenly they are just rogue factions and misunderstandings and Shepard is just an ignorant grunt who had no idea what was going on.

FWIW, I think the biggest problem with the story changes in ME:2 are really just problems with ME:1. I think the writing in ME:1 was kinda shitty. Great concept, but most of the storyline was too one-dimensional and kind of formulaic and schlocky.

The game doesn't live up to that high praise in practice?

Honestly, if only ME1 existed itd be not too far off (if a little overenthusiastic). But some of the story changes in ME2 and ME3 run counter to the points made.

For example:
Quote
Mass Effect has a simple message: human beings are delusional about their importance in the grand scheme of things.

Contrast with the official product description for ME3:
Quote
Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.

I think they go a little bit far claiming that Star Wars is all humanoids and ME isnt, too. In my experience, theyre roughly even... both settings have a lot of non-humanoid secondary and background characters, but main characters are pretty much bipedal humanoids of average height.

Alrighty. Playing ME3. Excellent stuff. I think I'm not too far out from the endgame and I've been thoroughly enjoying the ride so far. Waffle, you'll be glad to hear that the railshooter parts are (very) few and mercifully short. And by short I mean 1, maybe 2 minutes.

I really like what they've done with this trilogy, especially when it comes to character development. I've gotten attached to several of the characters, so it's nice to see how they'll end up. The writing is excellent - occasionally brilliant - for a space soap opera epic like this. Gameplay-wise, I'm glad to see that they've streamlined the cover system. It doesn't feel nearly as jarring as it sometimes did in ME2.

For those of you who play as a Vanguard: don't be discouraged by a bit of a shitty feel to the class when the game starts. That doesn't last. Oh boy, does it not. Flitting about the battlefield like a biotically charged rhino and shotgunning people (or whatever they are) about the facial area is much more satisfying than it was in the previous games.

Soldiers are still shit. Sure, you get a bit of a slow-mo effect from one of your powers, but that's about it. Battles get very boring very fast. Besides, the new gear mechanism - carrying more/heavier gear significantly increases your power recharge times, whilst packing light gives you a bonus to them) means that you can fairly easily bring two types of weapons and throw your powers around like skittles at a children's party. Fun, fun.

Anyway, I figured I'd provide a little service to those of you who a) don't have Tali in your game because she got killed off in your ME2 game or b) aren't going to pursue a romance between your Shephard and Tali, but who'd still like an answer to the question Bioware's been teasing us with since ME1: what the Hell does she look like under the mask?

Without further ado:

I made some good progress on mass effect 2 recently. I got too the second disc and am in combat with a large, self healing thing.  I don't expect to hit ME3 soon, but am looking forward to it when I do.

Theres actually quite a big drama about it. Many fans are quite disappointed at the lack of effort compared to other parts of the game given it was highly anticipated (at least in some circles).
