I worry about this, and it parallels what happened to Wheel of Time.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to elaborate on this. Starting in book 4, Martin starts slowing things down a lot and weaving in more characters. It hasn't gotten nearly as bad as WoT, but if he keeps it up it certainly will. But I don't really expect him to; I figure [the young man on the boat] is the last major character he needs to introduce. We'll see though...

In a writer workshop, a lecturer said, "If you get stuck in a plot, kill off a character. It'll surprise both you and the reader and will get things moving again."

I think GM attended that, or one similar.
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

Maybe - I wish he would do this with a few characters in the Danarys storyline.  Still I am pretty sure he had the Red Wedding and nearly headless Ned planned from the beginning.
“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.”

I think that we wont see the end of the royal Lannister line until the end of the series.
