Knowing that I will maybe give it another shot. At what point in the story should I stop feeling like I'm reading a book written in ancient greek?

It probably depends on the reader, but for me maybe half way through it started feeling like it made sense?

I think its due to a combination of factors. Part of it is just the author's inexperience for his first book (according to the old thread he has said he would like to rewrite it), part of it is that his style is naturally a quite leisurely pace and with a tendancy to give a lot of information, and part of it I think is intentional that you dont know everything that is going on straight away.

You have to work a bit to follow whats going on, but once it starts to come together theres also a feeling of reward that you can now get it. Learning a language (like Greek) is probably a pretty good analogy actually :P The whole series kind of feels like that a bit... slow going, but rewarding because it makes you work for it.

I'm very interested in this as well.

Sorry to be the nay-sayer, but I hated WoT. Gave up at the 4th book. Plowed through that far just because I felt like at some point I might get to what everyone was so excited about.

Didn't get into Malazan. Downloaded the sample for the kindle and just didn't enjoy the writing. Maybe I should have given it more time, but if I don't like the sample I can't justify paying for it.

I'll check out Lies of Locke Lamora

I got half way though book ten before packing it in.

The Steel Remains - Richard Morgan

A pretty interesting take on the fantasy sword hero, the protagonist is openly homosexual in a barely tolerant world.
There seems to be some sort of parralell reality thing going on.

It's the first of a trilogy, but winds up as if it's not.

Good read. Not very long.
this sounds interesting.

I'd add more, but then I'd be spoiling it.
Well worth checking out. Looking back on it, it's even a little bit lovecraftian.

TAPOR: you should give the next WoT book a chance. Stuff actually happens! But I won't think less of you if you don't. I downloaded a sample of the Steel something or other. I'll let you know what I think.

One of these days I might do it.
Still have a pile of books waiting to be read that I bought at the beginning of last year.

Fair enough. I have a pile of books that I bought two years ago that I still haven't gotten through. Because I keep buying other books. :/

Yarp. That's the crux of it.
Also that whole parenting gig kinda taxes your reading time.

When I want to read I have to retire to the smallest room in the house. If you get my meaning.

Yeah. You can blow out an o-ring if you sit on the toilet too long.

Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.”

Nice. Me, I'm just worried that I'll miss my stop if I get too involved in a book. I've stopped listening to music on the train while I read for this reason.

I didn't like (and couldn't finish) Song of Ice and Fire.  I also didn't like (and couldn't finish) the Malazan books.  Perhaps if you like one you'll like the other...

So what fantasy series did you like AND finish?

ETA: Also that's quite the logical leap.

If not-A and not-B then A and B. (forgive me on my probable lack of correct logic syntax, I'm just guessing at what something like that might look like)
