Things the Bible bans but Christians do anyway
« on: Mar 07, 2012, 05:10:56 PM »
Stumbled across this, and thought it was pretty good.

I've heard all of these before, but like the way he puts them. It also occurred to me that the one which says, "you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed" would ban most backyard gardens.
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

That would be true if Christians were bound to the old law.
common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Yeah, come on! They're only bound by the parts of the old law they feel like being bound by!

As a final note, I know that nine of these 11 cite the Old Testament, which Christianity doesn’t necessarily adhere to as law.

To which I say: If you’re going to ignore the section of Leviticus that bans about tattoos, pork, shellfish, round haircuts, polyester and football, how can you possibly turn around and quote Leviticus 18:22 (“You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”) as irrefutable law?

Doesn't it depend if you are a Paulist, Peterist, Smithist, Whiteist, Russellist, etc.?

I know Paulism and Peterism are similar.

I never watched the show.  That was epic.
Nobody these days holds the written word in such high esteem as police states do.  What statistic allows one to identify the Nations where Literature enjoys true consideration better than the sums appropriated for controlling and suppressing it.

::)   Obviously, Christians pay heed to the parts that obviously aren't barbaric, and ignore the bits that obviously no longer apply for, like, obvious reasons, and stuff.  There is widespread agreement on this, obviously.

You can find all the answers in the bible. The difficulty is choosing which of those answers is correct.

I don't know about that.  Is there a passage in the bible that says, "this is all bullshit, use reason and experiment to understand the universe?"

Thanks for adding that last quote in there, and saving me from having to look it up.  Clearly "wisdom" is the province of God, and He bestows it upon us through teh bibble.  And teh bibble dun say the erf is flat!

Genesis 38:9-10: “Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother. But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord; so He took his life also.

Wait what? So, it's OK to go sleep with your brother's wife, but to dare spill sperm on the ground is heresy?
