Morgan Freeman and Rendezvous with Rama

My first thought was that Morgan Freeman was going to produce a live-action American remake of the anime series, Ranma 1/2.

Well, that's what good script writers are for. From 30 year old memories it didn't have much plot to make an exiting movie however that shouldn't stop a good writer from making a good movie out of the concept. Fingers crossed. Some sort of plotline like Contact would work IMHO. (Obviously without the did it really happen? bit) The more I think about it the more I think it should be easy to get a good script, even with a fair bit based on Earth with the ramifications of what such a structure would mean to how we view ourselves in the Universe.

My first thought had something to do with MF and his grand-daughter.
The problem with taking hard sci-fi and making a movie out of it, is that it will end up as a shitty horror movie that no one will like. The fans will hate it because of the departure from the books. The movie-goers will hate it because it will have shitty writing, acting, and directing.

I thik Freeman will have enough control as Producer to not allow that to happen. They may have to add more tension though. I have not read RwR in years, but according to the wiki the only real tension is when the guy crashes his skybike and has to get back.

This seems to have been in development hell for almost the last decade, no? I thought I first heard about it almost ten years ago...
And does anyone know if he has the film rights to the whole series or just the first book? If it's the whole series I's think they would be much better off just starting with Rama II, since the first book kind of comes of as just a really long prologue. Everything in it needed plot wise could easily be revealed through flashbacks/opening narration/in movie news casts. The plot for Rama II would make a MUCH better movie and has way more action in it (at least in my opinion).
