The Hunger Games
« on: Mar 14, 2012, 11:01:40 AM »
The movie from this excellent novel opens March 23. The trailer came out last week, and looks pretty good. The fact that Suzanne Collins, the book's author, did the screenplay is encouraging. The producers sank a hundred million into it, but that does not always mean a good film. However, the fact that they've already started production on the sequels is a sign that they have some confidence in the movie. Also, I've noticed that the weaker a producer considers a film, the more advertising they do for it. It's like they figure, "This movie is so good that we don't have to waste money on ads. Word of mouth will do it for us." I have not seen a lot of advanced ads for this movie. Advance tickets have about sold out.

I'm reading the book now and loving it.  From what the trailer shows, the movie looks to be fairly faithful but who knows.  As for how well it's expected to do, IGN recently wrote this article saying that based on box office tracking data, it's poised to do better than Twitlight: Breaking Hymen part one.

The book trilogy is one of my favourites, I'm just worried that if I hype myself over the film I will be disappointed.

I hope it turns out well though.

I just started reading the book today.  you can get it now from the kindle lending library if you own a kindle and have amazon prime.

So far I can't say it's grabbing me but I am a fast reader so I'll give it a go.

I enjoyed the books. Had a hard time putting them down because they were so faced paced. Still I had a lot of qualms with them. I hate that there is so little background on why the world is like this, a huge unfulfilling and simplistic explanation of how the world actually is, and absolutely no social commentary (which some people might like, but I'd rather have some commentary than none in a post-apocalyptic novel).

Anyway, I'm excited about the movie.

Been a while since I read the books, but I thought the background was explained, or did I just make my own up?

Set in the future, global warming ruined everything, oppressive government, people decided to rebel, didn't work, yearly reminder of it.

That's it for background, though. It's not detailed enough. It's just sort of brushed over. I wouldn't want a whole novel dedicated to the background, but at least a half dozen pages. Also it's open to interpretation that it was global warming from what I remember.

looks like it'll be a teen romance version of The Island. a good idea boiled down into something suitable for the blockbuster business model.
