Hazard is my biggest concern too. However, and maybe it's a stateside thing; fearing the overreach of the "war on terror" and the effects of "if you see something, say something" thing. Stupid little things, like a college art project involving a suitcase with balloons and a sign that says "have a nice day", a silly sophomoric public art installation, which in times past would have people rolling their eyes as they walk past, now has the feds breaking down doors before supper (true story). Granted, that one does have a Keith Ledger Jokeresque vibe to it, but then so does a worldwide floatie epidemic.

Anyway, the best advise I've found today is to contact a local business that conducts or arranges mass balloon releases, and get the skinny from them, about laws and concerns. The CARs(?) in Oz and the FARs(?) in the US, these airspace regulations, are in written in bureaucrateese, and I can't deal with that. My brain ejects itself from my skull when confronted with such.

I found this website which has some good ideas and makes some good points.
http://www.balloonhq.com/faq/deco_releases.html

And I totally agree about the bloody curling ribbon. Out bush a few years ago found a pile of curling ribbon from a large cluster of balloons. The balloons had pretty much rotted away however the curling ribbon was there for the long haul.
Tethering is an issue, even with biodegradable string. What we need is water soluble string. And then there is the waste from teh battery and few components. :-\ What to people think, cost - benefit analysis? In my mind the small amount of litter is worth it if people exposed to the hoax think a bit better and are more critical in the future?

Funny; I wrote a long thing, and when I went to post I got the new post warning, and checked, and Zytheran had said what I was thinking about in very many fewer words.

Last night I went up on the roof to watch the Falcon 9 launch. Pretty spectacular. Night launches are cool. I wouldn't put it past the slack jawed locals to mistake that for a UFO, even born and bread rednecks who ought to know that in the direction of Cape Canavaral there be fire breathing dragons. It was fun to watch the live stream on the roof and wait for the blaze of orange to silently come above the horizon and arc away, getting dimmer and dimmer, turning into a spot, and then blinking out. I had even toyed with hauling up a tripod, but really, these things look like an orange pixel in a huge black field. Glad I stayed up all night, but now I'm paying for it.

Nibiru Planet x? Germany 22.05.2012

Alrighty. Someone mistook the moon for a UFO.

The solar eclipse was just 2 days before this was recorded and a thin crescent moon is exactly what you would see 2 days later. I guess the solar eclipse didn't get a lot of press in Germany.

This is for the guys planning  UFO invasion:

Quote
The mystery surrounding possible UFOs in San Antonio has been solved thanks to a FOX S.A. viewer. Tuesday night you may have seen our story about dozens of viewers calling 911 about strange, reddish lights they saw in the sky last week. Roger Barrera even caught one of the lights on video. Turns out, a neighbor was lighting sky lanterns a few streets over.Link

Stealth's the word. Be careful your neighbors don't catch you or they'll spoil the whole thing.

Oh here's a good one. The current episode of the Paracast is about the Aztec UFO Incident :

http://www.theparacast.com/podcast/now-playing-may-20-2012-scott-and-suzanne-ramsey/

Despite evidence that the whole thing was cooked up by some oil fraudsters, the guests have spent 25 years and half a million bucks proving otherwise!

My favorite episodes are the ones where the main host is incredulous!

This guy's RC hyperblimps constantly get people in a tizzy, especially when he loses them over the SLC valley and they start tumbling over I-15. "Witnesses" assume these craft are anywhere from 200m to several kilometers long.

Good deal. Was thinking $200 US for project, based on some throwie/floatie maker pages. Cheaper is easier on my student budget, locally I could probably get everyone in my little bro's PhD program to chip in and participate (and supply helium from their labs), and some skeptical and artsy friends here too. It would be a fun social/drinking event, though I'm not very social and don't drink, but that would be a draw for a skeptically drinking/UFO kind of thing. Elswere in the country and the world, especially L.A. and SLC I've got monied sciency nerdy artsy friends who will go all out, and some art school buddies who now reside in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Need to put out a feeler for them.

I wonder if it's worth getting to know the local skeptic societies and getting them in on it.

I said I didn't haul up a tripod for the Space X launch, but I did dangle my G12 around my neck, even knowing it would be a wee orange pixel on a noisy black field. Still, UFO photographers, eat your hearts out.

I suggest breaking the project talk off into a (non-searchable) thread.    I'll participate.
