I think it is definitely ingrained into the Western Psyche. There are stories in ancient Greece also where a baby is set to sea such as Perseus.

Is there any Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Native American traditions of a similar nature which are mythic?
There is a lot of more recent stuff but that is more likely to be cross cultural.
