I personally think that religion, while probably not triggering her actions, did give cover for it

This is mental illness through and through. The form was Christian but really, an atheist would have done something equally horrible, just with another framing.

I wonder about that.
Nobody these days holds the written word in such high esteem as police states do.  What statistic allows one to identify the Nations where Literature enjoys true consideration better than the sums appropriated for controlling and suppressing it.

The question is if there are any cases recorded of people starting from a rational world view and they are headed for a psychosis, what is the initial reaction out of them. Will they catch it, or maybe somebody else will catch it, before something horrible occurs.

Edit: Reading a few articles on "schizophrenic vulnerability" and it does appear to be argued around the edges almost exactly what I am arguing. The idea is that the "belief in demons" is a trigger which causes such mental breakdowns.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc.
common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Laughter as a defense reaction to horror?  Yes.

I just feel sad for mankind and go pet my cat. He would never try anything like that.

You've never seen your cat play with a mouse have you?

Ah, the Dead Space method of extracting things from bodies. She's doing it wrong.
Pakistan’s foreign Ministry spokesperson said that “anyone who describes Islam as a religion as intolerant encourages violence.” Remember folks: Islam is the religion of peace, and if you don't agree, WE'LL KILL YOU.
