My workout?

P90X videos.

Follow routine strictly for about 25 days....see results, admire myself in a mirror a bit, become complacent and coast through the next 10 days or so.....quit for a couple months, get sad all my efforts are wasting away, repeat....

You forgot the most important part: Boast about P90X workout routine on Facebook, show up to your high school reunion 50 pounds overweight.

I decided I'm going to change things up today and start working on building bigger muscles.  I was doing 3 set of 10 - 12 reps, but I'm going to move to 5 sets of 5 reps at a higher weight.  I'm expecting this to hurt for a while, but I can't seem to break this plateau I've hit.

How much effort do you put in—do you go to failure?

I try to.  I did this with my arms today and played around with the weights until I was hitting failure at 5 reps.  I've never really tracked how much I'm lifting, but I'm not seeing the results I want, so it's time for me to really start getting serious, buck up and do the scheming and tweaking to get where I want.

You people gain weight when you eat too much? And you do how much exercise a week? Jesus Christ you people are weird... I do hardly any exercise but I never seem to gain weight.

This, well except for the weird part. I've varied in weight by 5 pounds +- since the ninth grade. I read a press release that suggested we will die quicker in that we don't have fat reserves for periods of incapacitation, so enjoy it now.

There is such a thing as skinny fat people.  They look skinny on the outside, but their internal organs are covered in a thick layer of fat.

Sorry about the source, but it was the best hit on the first page of google.

Let us all know how the new routine world out for you Karen. It is a good idea to mix up your upper body work out. Your body will get use to it very quickly. Lift as heavy as you can and don't be afraid to dip down to 4 reps to keep moving up in weight. I have been doing the 5x5 work out for a few month and I like it. It does take more time to Finnish my work outs because of the 5 set thing. Remember with the 5 rep workout moving up in weight is key.

Apparently not.  I've been hearing a lot of misconceptions about this lately.  And this was mostly pointed at daemonowner.

I guess I hang out with too many serious athletes, listen to too many researchers and practitioners, and read too many books that challenge the conventional wisdom of health and fitness.

Don't forget nutrition, too. It's conceivable that you're not eating enough. I don't think it's necessary (and definitely not desirable) to get fat ("bulk up"), but it's pretty hard to grow muscle on insufficient calories.

Ya everything that I have read on this has said that you have to beef up to get muscle to grow. You can do it the other way but it takes forever.

I have some excess fat stores.  It's not much, but it's also not going away.  I could cut 3-5 inches off my waist and be much happier.  I have this potbelly that refuses to submit.  That's really what I'm talking about getting results on.  I've certainly grown arm and leg muscles, and my weight has stayed the same, so fat is getting removed from somewhere.  I'm just hoping to make the movement happen more.
