Writing Group

Does anyone here do any writing of their own? I’ve been considering trying to get back into to writing again, and have a general idea of a fiction story I might like to try out… It’s just that I tend to be very depressively insecure about myself and horribly unmotivated about actually going through with things. Some sort of social support seems to possibly help, and thus I am shamelessly begging asking if there is anyone here who does any writing or is in any sort of groups that do... >.>

I'm planning on taking next month off to write a novel, if that helps.

I belong to a couple. They can be useful for getting feedback. Also, for editing for typos and misspellings. You get so close to something that after awhile you just can't spot problems on your own. It's handy to exchange manuscripts and then editing someone else's work while they do yours.
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

I was part of one. It evolved into a literature festival. Kind of awesome.

I think I need something to force me to work on my writing.

I belong to a 'Black Library'-centric group/forum, of sorts, known as The Bolthole. It's got a wee blog attached, has a nice presence of authors & publishers as well as fledgling authors. It's pretty straight-up fanfic, but interestingly enough, the original founder of the forum has herself managed to achieve her goals and get herself published: Sarah Cawkwell

She's a decent author too.

Sure, it's mainly speculative fiction, but it's a nice little community of aspiring types. The 'Other Fiction' forum is probably of most interest to folks, but nevertheless - I do heartily recommend it. (I'm Xisor over there, should anyone like it enough to stick around.)

:O What are you going to write about?

I belong to a couple. They can be useful for getting feedback. Also, for editing for typos and misspellings. You get so close to something that after awhile you just can't spot problems on your own. It's handy to exchange manuscripts and then editing someone else's work while they do yours.

I can certainly agree with this. It's difficult not to get too attached to things like this.

I was part of one. It evolved into a literature festival. Kind of awesome.

I think I need something to force me to work on my writing.

Are you no longer in it then? Do you write often? What helps you keep writing?

It changed into something else, and anyway I moved to another town. I still go to some of their events, including the aforementioned festival.

I write a lot less now that I work full-time. Being in a group forces me to be productive. We met every Monday. It was nuts.

Yeah, it's a fairly focussed bunch of folks. Still, it is a functional writing group, of sorts. How much use it is might not be especially great.

My degree is in creative writing, which means I've done a whole bunch of the "writing group" thing, and that's kind of soured me to it, TBH. It's good to use as an excuse to churn out new work (although IME a lot of people recycle the same story over and over again, which is kind of annoying) and it's interesting sometimes to see your own errors in other peoples' work, but... I guess my biggest issue is, if you're not being critical enough of your own writing you're not likely to be accepting of other peoples' criticism, and on the flip side if you *are* critical enough, having other people give you advice is frankly of limited use most of the time. Sometimes it does help to have someone who knows what they're doing read through your stuff just to let you know if you're completely full of crap or not, but you don't need a writer's group to do that.

I do have to say that if all you get out of writers' groups are simple proof-reading and spell-checking, you're doing it wrong. REALLY wrong.

Hmm... well once I start getting into it I may have to start sending you some stuff to look at. ;D (Unless of course you would rather me not....)

Although I doubt my stuff will be really all that good. I'm fairly creative, but Ive never been all that good of a writer....

Is anyone else interested? >.>  :sweatdrop:
