Episode #353?
« on: Apr 21, 2012, 03:24:03 PM »
I'm guessing that the NECSS conference happening today is what's slowing down the release of Episode #353, which I can certainly understand.  But can someone tell me when we might expect a new episode to be released?  I don't mind waiting, but it would help me to wait more patiently if I knew how long I need to wait....

The podcast is already up there. I don't know why there is nothing about it on the web site yet.

Just take the URL to download last week's podcast and change the date in the file name from 14 to 21.

Steve somehow or other always manages to upload a new episode when you would think he is already impossibly busy. Rebecca tweeted on 16 Apr that they were recording an episode. I imagine Steve will release it sometime today.

Or just do what Trinoc did.

The Rapture happened and only Steve and the SGU podcasters were the only ones saved.

I'll be interested to hear the SGU take on the Steve Spangler video, which I think Steve said would be discussed next week. It puts two favourite skeptical issues into conflict with each other: debunking of phony health scares versus debunking the promotion of food supplements.

I wonder whether the line will be (1) "Don't be silly, it's perfectly safe to eat metallic iron", (2) "Look how supplements in food can be dangerous to you", (3) A balance somewhere between the two, or (4) Something else I haven't thought of yet.

Usually the skeptical response to most things can be guessed by reference to the usual responses to standard issues, but in this case it's a fight between two tropes pulling in opposite directions, so I wouldn't like to call which one it will be.

Hopefully he'll mention that those big chunks of iron are going to pass right through the digestive system with very little getting absorbed and it is false advertising to claim a cereal is fortified with iron when it uses big chunks.

Not only the size of the chunks .. they probably dissolve quite well in the acid of the stomach. The digestive system rejects most metal ions as contamination, so to get required metals into the system they need to be chelated (a dirty word in skeptic circles), i.e. the metal atoms hidden in organic molecules which fool the digestive system into allowing them in.
