Racing (non motorized)

I know we have at least one Iron Man, but how about the rest of you? Anyone do anything from 5ks to crazy-pee-yourself-in-public-races? I am doing my first race ever today and I am exited, its a 100k relay race.

Sounds like fun man!  Let us know how it went!  I did an Olympic distance triathlon (1.5k/40k/10k) yesterday here in Vegas and it was a brutal 100*F down by the lake.  I finished in 6th and still feel the exhaustion from the heat.

Booooo to the title :P. I've got a dirt bike enduro in 2 weeks time. How about letting some moto into the thread? It's fitness related,  promise.

I dragged the dirt bike out of summer storage for a 90 minute ride yesterday. I even put a heart rate monitor on which averaged 155. Not as much as a push bike, but I did max out the heart through all the whoops. (Large repetitive bumps along the track). Also, thanks to taking up cycling, I feel a 100% improvement in my stamina compared to last year. I wasn't able to finish my last race (6 months ago), I was jut too unfit, and I swear my heart was maxed out for most of it.

Yeah I know how physically demanding those can be to drive. I just don't seem someone saying "I am going to get in shape by riding 25 miles a day".

I do a half marathon every six months or so.  I'm not anything approaching competitive.  I've also run the Bay to breakers 12k for the last 3 years.

Before the bunch crash last October I was competing in age group x-c mountain and road cycling events.  Five years ago I won the men's 55+ catagory (a fortnight after my birthday, mind you) in a mtb race that I was only allowed to help marshal last sunday.  I'll be back, sexegenarians rule.

OK, I prepared a long diatribe, with links to heart rate, calories burned and the increase in core strength when riding moto enduro events; but lucky for you all, my tablet crashed as I went to press post.  That did give me a moment to ponder the thread, and OK, you have a point, I don't know anyone that got into this sport with the aim of getting fit.

Some pics of my triathlon last weekend.  It was a scorching 100*F by the time I started the run and I was suffering!

About to dismount:

The first 5K of the run is straight up a big hill!  That + the fact that it's eleventy-billion degrees out put me in the hurt locker big time!

Crossing the finish, I look like I am about to take off and fly home LOL.  I took sixth. meh.

Nice!  I used to do races a lot.  I did the LA Marathon, the Phoenix Rock & Roll Marathon, numerous 1/2 marathons and supernumerous 10Ks.  I've always been a finisher, but never very competitive.

I also did the Hood to Coast relay a couple of times.  It's a 12 person relay race that covers about 200 miles from Mount Hood to the Oregon coast town of Seaside.  I lost my racing mojo the last time I did the Hood to Coast, which was 2004, and I haven't raced since.  I've been a lot more active over the last 10 months, so I may get motivated to race again.  Who knows?

Last year I did the Warrior Dash, and am planning on doing it again this year. Only a 5k, but with lots of awesome obstacles, including jumping over fire and crawling through mud. I don't run it for time (my XC days in high school are alas behind me), but more for the fun of it and for the motivation to whip myself into shape. Plus, you get free beer after you finish  ;)

Well Karma came and bit me on the arse! I should have paid more attention and not rode motorbikes as a way of getting fit. I hit a log in the race on the weekend which shot me over the handlebars and into the dirt. I get a report on the injury tomorrow, but it looks as if I've torn the ligaments holding my shoulder together :P........The thread is now saved from motorized input!

Picture of me suffering in the Tour de Fire last weekend. I thought I'd make a promo poster for next years event.  ;D  Took me 8 hours and 20 minutes to finish.  I wanted to sell my bike when I was done LOL.
