"Karma's a bitch".

No it's not, its an imaginary construct designed to make people feel better about bad things happening to themselves or others.

There are too many to choose from, but "Everything happens for a reason" is the first to come to mind. I absolutely HATE it when people say that. Especially after something truly horrible happens. What a moronic, dickish thing to say.

I have so much hate for this quote (and sentiment), not only because it's crap, but because it puts an expectation on the person who has gone through that horrible thing that they need to somehow 'grow' from it, and that if they don't, they're being ungrateful for the gift they've been given.

A similar one is a bit more religious, but I hear it quite often, being some variation on "we're not given a challenge that we're not able to overcome." I don't think I need to explain why this is so messed up.

I've got a friend who once expressed the idea that it's comforting knowing that everything happens for a reason, that there's a grand plan and everything is being guided.

I replied that it doesn't make me comfortable at all. If there's someone controlling everything, he's doing a really fucked up job of it.

"Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get"

Yes, you get fucking chocolate.

(Yes, I know he's talking about the chocolates with various fillings. It still gets me all riled up, though.)

Seems quite apt, actually. If you don't have a key, you don't know what your going to get, unless the chocolate maker uses some standard you have particular experience with, or you have a legend, which are sometimes hard to understand. I don't read them. I just go after the shapes I've learned usually by some companies have better tastes inside. Sometimes this fails horribly.

But it's variety that is narrowly confined: in the same way that life for a male in Canada is confined. You can make a prediction (it's chocolate) but not specifics (Carmel filling). But you can get different candies for, say, women in Africa.

I like the mix of predictability and variation. So, I think it's a good one.
Get off your high horse. It's not enough to be correct. Being correct is only the first step. Your not true a god among men until you can convince others.

Are you presenting facts, or are actually communicating?

You know, wouldn't it be better if we just remained friends?

Nobody these days holds the written word in such high esteem as police states do.  What statistic allows one to identify the Nations where Literature enjoys true consideration better than the sums appropriated for controlling and suppressing it.

All's well that ends well.  Of course, it is what it is.
