Performance Art...

Eternally Learning:
Ran across this today:

Lilith Performance Studio, June 5, 2010 - Melati Suryodarmo - butterdance.mov

Whenever I see stuff like this, I can't help but think that "performance art" is merely code for "talentless person who wants to be an artist."  I don't really want this to turn into another "what is art" conversation but honestly, who does this kind of thing appeal to and why?

I should note, that I'm not saying all performance art is bad or talentless, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

Ohhh...I don't have time for this rant conversation right now.  Gotta do the amusement tax returns and deal with a rescheduled concert, etc.  But ay harry caray, performance art.

Tatyana:
I really don't like much performance art.

Something like Slava Snow Show is great, but this sort of thing is few and far between. I am not sure if this would be considered performance art as it is more in the traditional clown tradition.

I'm happy to accept anything as art as soon as it's presented as such. Quality is a different thing, though. That performance had zero aesthetic appeal, and it didn't stimulate or challenge me intellectually. The main takeaway for me was irritation at an abject attention-whore. But perhaps my interpretation is errant. :)

But if anyone takes the slightest positive from watching that, more power to them. I don't see a use in railing against a classification of art.

Eternally Learning:
That's why I framed this as a personal reaction and not an objective observation.  The "what is art" conversations take up a lot of time and effort and I'm more interested in the positive subjective reactions to this as well as the mindset that went into creating it.  For all I know, this was meant to be a mockery and in that case I'd love it, but the lady had a look about her that says, "I take myself waaaayyy too seriously."
