Poutine
« on: Apr 29, 2012, 04:41:58 AM »
Poutine is a Canadian dish, which looks like concentrated cholesterol and carbohydrates in a tight package. Eating it reputedly shaves five years off of your life from cardiovasular deterioration alone. Is it worth it?

I've never had it, but I've had all the components separately, I like them, and I can see how combining them would be appealing. If I ever go to Canada, I will try it.

I thought you misspelled routine, so I'm probably not the right person to ask. However, it sounds good based on your description.

It actually looks really disgusting to me, but I try to stay away from these sorts of foods.

I've tried it a couple of times and its always been pretty mediocre.  Not bad but I'd rather be eating something else.

Poutine is the food of the gods (when done properly). If any of you happen to find yourselves in Montreal, and you want to try some, let me know; I will show you where the good stuff is.

If it looks disgusting, then you don't have to try, surely...

Doesn't look all that bad to me. I've had chips with gravy before, its a common dish at most fish and chips shops in Australia. The cheese curds looks a little nasty, but then I've put regular cheese on chips and gravy before and that was fine. It certainly doesn't look disgusting to me.

In Adelaide we have a dish called an AB (short for ABortion or AfterBirth). It's basically fries with yiros (doner kebab) meat, garlic sauce, tomato sauce and (optionally) chilli sauce. It looks disgusting, but after a night out drinking on the town it's the most delicious thing thing in the world. You practically buy it by the kilo, and the local residential colleges used to compete for who could order the largest AB. I think the record is about $500 worth.

You only live once, dude. Don't worry about the five years you're allegedly shaving off your life. Those years come at the end, and those are the shitty years that no one really wants but they cling to nonetheless because they get terrified of death because they feel like they didn't experience everything they wanted to in their life, but they can't experience those things now because their on a special diet and they're too old to do anything exciting.

Totally worth it. Add bacon if you can.

I still maintain they are trying the wrong kind. Poutine-making doesn't leave much room for error, and it can very easily go wrong. All three ingredients need to be top-notch. A single weak link and the whole thing's ruined.
