EhJayArr, with my short legs a 12 minute mile (or better says your quote) is impossible without running, not in real-world situation with hills and rocky terrain. Yet I enjoy the hills and rocky terrain!

While on my daily walk I listened to a Fresh Air with Terry Gross interview with a writer who specializes in health/fitness for the New York Times. A fantastic interview, started out making me shake my head at how lazy most people are, but then she and Terry addressed the question at the root of this thread. I highly recommend the interview, I ordered the book, will report once I've read it. You can read a chapter of the book on Terry's site, which I did and liked the author's approach.

Bottom line is there's a difference between health and fitness. A 30+minute walk daily will bring you health and will extend your life and quality of life. A 30+minute run daily will bring your both health and fitness, although the harder your run, the more likely you are to get injured, hence fit but not healthy for a while at least. The author runs BTW, so this isn't justification for laziness. Age plays into it too. I'm going to be 47 in a few days, and seeing that I've been a total couch potato my whole life, my goals are definitely more towards health than fitness.

I haven't been in good shape lately, so I began walking a mile a day, and now I'm walking 2-3 miles a day, sometimes running part of the way, and sometimes spending 30 minutes on an exercise bike. Initially I started eating more (and more than just compensating for the calories burned), but now I'm starting to get back to an equilibrium where it's easier to moderate my caloric intake.

That's cool, keep it up!

The more I think about it, if Ihad to chose only one form of exercise, walking might be the most advantageous choice.  I just did a two day tramp with the outdoor ed kids and loved every minute.  I slept well and created a prodigious appetite, sated with lots of meat, eggs and vegetables, coffee... and a wee dram after tea.

Just walked 7 1/2 miles today from downtown Bellevue to Redmond. The thing I like about walking, particularly with a backpack, is that it's just strenuous enough that you feel it at the end of the walk but not so bad you can't concentrate on your audiobook (hooray Hunger Games!).

I feel the same way about biking. I don't think I could walk 7.5 miles without my feet wanting to die at the end.

Maybe I need better shoes. :P

You get calluses eventually. The bottom of my feet are like tanned cowhide.

I remarked a few weeks ago to my brother who is into biking and his partner that I walk around all the time in part because bikes are hard. Their remedy, apparently, was some special kind of bike where the pedals aren't connected to each other and so you have to pull up as well as push down. THANKS GUYS THE OPPOSITE OF HELPING THOUGH

Yeah, I didn't fully realize the different muscle groups that you use when I went to Portland last month. In part because I quite smoking, and in part because I'm in relatively better physical shape, I thought "I can handle walking all around DT PDX". That was a terrible mistake. The front of my shins and my hamstrings were not happy. Again, though, it might just be that I need better shoes. :(

Kudos to you on the 7.5 miles, I walked to Hunger Games also, all 3 books are really good, but I'm all done with them now.

Johnny reported the same discovery in reverse a while ago when a foot problem sent him to the bikes at the gym, as I recall.  I'm sure he has a fine, strong pair of walkin' legs, but the bike kicked his ass.

Speaking of which, I should really take my skates down to Cedar Beach Park West now that they've blacktopped the walking path.  I love to walk, but on eight wheels I can really feel it in my butt and my lower quads.
