The downside of state health insurance is where it goes - but maybe budget cuts are not all bad

This is one thing that terrifies me about any government health care program; how do you keep out the crazies?

One idea would be to require the proof of efficacy before the treatment would be included in the program.  Make the pushers of "pray the AIDS away" cover the costs of researching and publishing their findings.

Have a look at how most of the rest of the world does it.  Medicine is well practiced here in New Zealand, "Crazies" are under control here.

(American) Pharmaceutical companis hate us because our Pharmac does a seriously good job at bargaining down the prices of meds and devices.

From what I've heard, Australia has a pretty good pharmaceuticals scheme when compared to the rest of the world. Most of the usual types of drugs (anti-biotics etc) are very cheap as they are covered under the PBS. It's good that they're examining the "fringe" medicines to evaluate their effectiveness before funding them. They still have a way to go though, accupunture, naturopathy and chiropractic are still covered by my health insurance. I'd much rather that money go into dental, physio, dieticians, and hospital care.
