My Skeptical alarms are going off......intermittent fasting guys? (Eat Stop Eat)
341gerbig:
Im reading a book called "eat stop eat", it is written by a Nutritionist, he used to work for the muscle supplement industry, until he started reading studies and found the majority of what he had been told about muscle building diets, weight loss diets, and fasting does not match the available peer reviewed studies that he read, he soon quit his supplemental job and went off to find out the truth about diets and dieting. He came up with this book:
His story sounds like a typical story at the start of these books, and his book looks like any other half-assed diet book
It claims that fasting for two 24 hour periods a week will not only help you lose weight, but it will help you sleep better, correct insulin levels, correct hormone levels, build muscle, preserve muscle mass etc. It dispels myths about fasting (you will lose muscle, your body will go into starvation mode etc)
It basically promotes: eat healthy food for 5 days a week, lots of veggies and fruit, lots of protein, decent amount of fat, not a much processed food etc, and for 2 days a week (could be split over 2 days, like Noon from one day to noon of another) eat or drink nothing over 20 calories (so flavoured water + gum is fine).
This immediately set off my skeptical alarm, but every claim he makes is backed up by a peer reviewed paper/study. Plus how he writes the book is very skeptical, he acknowledges the differences between anecdotal evidence and true evidence, and he doesn't employ weasel words, and he admits when what he is saying doesn't have enough studies to be fully accurate. His writing is very humble and sounds very grounded in logic and the scientific method.
I want to try this program out, but my skeptical alarms are still going off. Opinions guys?
Plastique:
I've heard fasting can work. Regardless, I still wouldn't touch it. Part of a good diet is finding something that's tolerable and maintainable long-term. Not eating for 24 hours twice a week sounds fucking horrible. Same reason I don't do calorie/macronutrient cycling.

Is there any hard evidence that it works and is healthy though?

I sorta skimmed it. All the way down at the bottom is a link to a short book a guy wrote about his experience with it. http://www.precisionnutrition.com/intermittent-fasting
I only read that slightly more thoroughly. It's not something I'm interested in putting myself though, so I'm not expending a lot of brain power on it. Clearly, those people have.
