Aldi must be different where I live, or maybe they have changed since I used to work near one. At that time, it was mostly large stacks of packaged goods. It was also the type of food that makes people overweight and unhealthy (high salt and fat). I'm curious to check again if there is a chance they are selling fresh stuff.

Lidl/Aldi is the grocery store of last resort for my wife and I here in Germany.

You'll find some good deals on some things, but there's lots of junk.

In Germany, I prefer Edeka and the local butcher/baker.....

It's not too surprising that Aldi is spreading around the US.  They are the parent company of "Trader Joes" as I recall....
Well.  There it is.

Edeka was more expensive where we lived but it was nice to shop there.

The Aldi near me must get their produce from the throw outs at Harris Teeter and the products on the floor, not shelves, must be from a truck accident. Obviously ours is of a different type.

We used to do our shopping at Food Lion before they closed down everywhere in the south.

I really like that most of the generic products are made by brand companies. At least here in Germany.

As I understand with TJ's that almost always the case.

For example, Gordon Biersch (A small, but fairly prominent, and pretty darn good CA brewer) does TJ's beer.

The German business model?
Well.  There it is.

That's true of a lot of generic brands, actually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_brand

Everywhere?  I just got back from Staunton, Virginia, and the Food Dog is alive and well there, and indeed, on up I-81 through Maryland.  I guess it depends on your definition of "south."

We still have a few here in NC but I wouldn't step foot into one of them.
