Continuum (New Canadian Sci-Fi series)
« on: May 28, 2012, 11:35:28 AM »
Just heard about this today, but it looks interesting:

Continuum - 3 Minute Sneak Peek

Definitely a little reminiscent of Time Trax's plot, but it's different enough to not seem like a complete rip-off.  Anybody catch this up North (looks to not be available in the US)?  Was it any good?

Managed to catch the premiere and I have to say that I rather enjoyed it.  There's a lot of moral grey area to all of the character in that you have the violent terrorists fighting for democracy and the law-abiding police officer fighting to maintain corporate control of all the world's nations which is decidedly non-democratic.  The story at this point is far from simple and it looks to be aiming for more complexity and less predictability.  If anyone gets a chance, you should check this out.

"Only on Showcase."

Showcase? Never heard of it.
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

Canadian channel apparently.  The only place I found it was a site called Icefilms.

I enjoyed the first two episodes and thought the writing and acting was above average to contemporary TV science fiction, which is a pretty low bar at the moment. It's also a good attempt at modernised cyberpunk, which as a genre is more relevant than ever. My only complaint is that the corporate dystopia is not really shown as that bad a place, because all we see is wealthy people being armchair revolutionaries, while it's really easy to effectively show the dark side of a world run by corporations.

I'm checking the second episode tonight, but I get the impression the future's details are going to continue to be revealed through Kiera viewing her memories and other flashbacks.  Still, the vague implications so far have done their job I thought.

Thanks for bumping this ting-bu-dong.  Off to look for it.

Me and Ms. Xptical turned it off almost right away.  I love SciFi, she doesn't.  But the show started off as SciFi and then "time jumped" into the present day.  Probably because sets and CG would cost too much.  Once she jumped to the present, it became just another (bad) cop show.

Maybe I wrote it off too soon, but I really long for a hard sci-fi show that doesn't just use tech as a MacGuffin to pass off stupid concepts...

It's not hard sci fi by any stretch, but I also wouldn't describe it as a police procedural. I would actually compare it to Terminator in that you have two factions stranded in the past fighting over control of the future.

I don't understand how you can judge something as bad when you haven't seen all of it.  I've seen the premiere a few times (shared it with others) and just finished the second episode and I still don't know if it's a good show.  It's got a lot going for it, but also a lot of potential pitfalls which could kill it so at the moment I'm cautiously optimistic and will reserve my judgment until I can see what the rhythm it settles into looks like.

Maybe I wrote it off too soon, but I really long for a hard sci-fi show that doesn't just use tech as a MacGuffin to pass off stupid concepts...

What you long for and what they produce don't have to line up to make a decent show.  They certainly aren't explaining in great detail all of the tech but they are at least including relatively plausible technobabble behind a lot of the tech.  The main thing that falls into what you're talking about is her suit though; they haven't explained what it is or how it works and has so far turned her invisible, changed color, displayed images and videos on par with a cell screen, hacked an ATM, hacked remote car locks and starters, emitted electrical shocks, absorbed pretty much all damage from direct bullet hits, and sent text messages exceeding 160 characters.  So far it doesn't bother me as most of its abilities are related to others (like changing colors and camouflaging), but it's not to hard to see it start dispensing Bat shark repellent either.

Still, this show looks like it might keep us guessing about what's going to happen next, what happened in the past, and who really has the world's best interests at heart and that I like a lot.  It also appears as if there will be plenty of flashbacks to the future so we may get to explore that more as well and who knows; maybe if they are successful and get a larger budget, we may get some storylines set in 2077 as well.

@EL

Yeah, I know I stopped too soon.  But if a show doesn't grab me *right* away, I usually turn it off.  I downloaded one show last week, and shut it off after a total of 3 seconds.  Ms. Xptical inquired about my haste.  I replied that the show has the "CW" logo, so I already know it's going to suck.

I think I'm going to wait until the entire season is out and download it all at once.  I'm too spoiled to wait week by week to watch something.

I know what you mean.  It's been a while since I've watched a good show as it aired and after having powered through all of Breaking Bad in a few weeks I'm getting the shakes here...
