I do not know what to make of this.  I think that is a good thing?

I'm not sure what to make of it either. XD Of course, its always difficult to tell what to make of a movie just based on the trailer. Very poor movies can have decent trailers. Although, its directed by Tim Burton, so I suppose it couldn't be too bad.

Also, I don't know anything about the original.

I've only caught the original a few times when my mother was watching it and from what I recall it was a much darker more serious soap opera than this and apparently this trailer has divided the fanbase between purists who are carrying pitchforks in Burton's direction and casual Burton enthusiasts who like the idea.  My mother loved the original and was excited about the idea of a remake but she hates Johnny Depp and I'm not sure if she'll like this.  Dark Shadows Original B/W Opening

the original dark shadows was a campy vampire soap opera. I remember watching it a couple of times when I was a kid. Vampires were not my favorite monsters. I like funny vampire movies though so this sounds like it might have potential.

My mother and I went to go see this for Mother's Day and it ended up being a pretty enjoyable film and one of the better vampire franchises I've seen.  The trailer is actually a bit misleading.  It has plenty of comedy moments but it's more in the way of a humorous satire of 70s pop culture but it still had a fairly decent balance of serious soap opera drama.  Johnny Depp gave a wonderful performance as Barnabas and even my mother liked him in this movie and she normally hates Johnny Depp.  My mother is a longtime fan of the original Dark Shadows and she enjoyed the remake movie a lot.  I just hope the popularity of the Avengers doesn't overshadow it since the ending set itself up for a sequel.

I'm not much into vampire movies except for the original dracula and lost boys. But I always thought the soap was funny and the vampire stick was just incidental.

My mom wanted Dark Shadows, and I wanted Avengers. The group we were with conceded to me. But after Avengers, as I was feeling despondent, mom wanted to theater hop into Dark Shadows. Man, that was just salt in the wound. I blew it. Should have been Dark Shadows all the way (and I've really begun to hate Depp in recent years, especially the Burton/Depp minutia they keep churning out, Dark Shadows was surprisingly okay... Maybe it just seemed that way after the let down of Avengers).
