Neverwhere is a very good choice, especially in audio.  Croup and Vandemar are fantastically engaging.
Hmmm.... Interesting. Hmmmm... I hope the BBC television show hasn't ruined it for me.

I enjoyed Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy; in fact that might be the only other YA series I've read as an adult. I ended up picking up Neverwhere, which pandaHOnium mentioned in one of the book threads. It's pretty cool so far.
If you like young adult fantasy, you should check out the Artemis Fowl series and the Percy Jackson series.
That sounds very, very wrong, and so I will not respond to it except to say that "young adult fantasy" is most certainly not something I will do a GIS on.

Is it safe to assume you've read Dune by Frank Herbert?  If not, get on it.

One of my favorite sci-fi characters and plot constructions is from Neptune Crossing by Jeffrey Carver.  Not audio, but apparently you can get it for free here: http://manybooks.net/titles/carverjother08Neptune_Crossing.html

Side question: I wanted to make a similar request in this forum; Suggest an audiobook for me! Is it better to add that to this thread or create a new one? I took the safe route and used this thread.

OK Gais and gals, I have a credit on audible. What should I do with it?

Bart Ehrman's books on the historical Jesus are good if you like that sort of thing. Barbara Tuchmann's "The Guns of August" is pretty fantastic (albeit a little dry). Christopher Moore, generally speaking.

Have you read Haruki Murakami's novels? It's not sci-fi, admittedly (the style is more like magical realism), but you'd like it.

Start with his most recent, 1Q84, or his best work, The Windup Bird Chronicles or Dance, Dance, Dance.

I keep forgetting to recommend this fantastic series, Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast, Titus Groan, Gormenghast and Titus Alone.

Absolute British classics, Peake was a contemporary of Tolkien, however, I think this trilogy is superior.

The BBC as also done a TV drama in the last ten years, and it is also available on Audible.

I generally hate fantasy, but Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is one of the best books I've ever read.

I just started on 1Q84. By the way, the audiobook version is 46 hours long.  :aaa:

:munch: I'll have to come back to this thread. Character-driven stories are my favorites, and I've read quite a few of the ones mentioned on the first page (I skimmed). Now that I have a library card, and am about to start school, I have access to a lot more reading material than previously. \o/

GET OUT OF MY HEAD. I'm starting that book tonight (1 hour wait for train, 20 minutes on train, 10 minutes to get home).

What did you think of his most recent book?

I am 2/3 of the way through 1Q84, and I'd give it 8.5 / 10. I guess it might go higher, depending on the ending. I think I still like Dance, Dance, Dance better, but this is very good. It might also be his longest novel (longer than the Windup Bird, seems like), but it still seems like a quick read. It sure goes by fast. Too fast, probably!
