Jewish Belief - Thoughts and Sin?
« on: Jun 03, 2012, 05:03:30 PM »
I am curious with Jewish beliefs and if anybody knows,
The "Sermon on the Mount" argues that thoughts are sins.
What is Jewish thought on this?
"Give me the storm and tempest of thought and action, rather than the dead calm of ignorance and faith. Banish me from Eden when you will; but first let me eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge."
— Robert G. Ingersoll

I would guess "no" seeing as how it's a sin to turn on a light switch on the sabbath, but you can set a timer on Thursday and it's all good.

I would say it depends on which sect of Judeism is followed.
Nobody these days holds the written word in such high esteem as police states do.  What statistic allows one to identify the Nations where Literature enjoys true consideration better than the sums appropriated for controlling and suppressing it.

Pooping and tripping are sins.
common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

From what I understand, in Judaism, the idea is mostly that thoughts can lead to physical actions and so thoughts that lead to actions that are considered sins should be avoided.  However thoughts are not sins in the sense of  the "Sermon on the Mount", with some exceptions.  Some commandments require you to love God, therefore hating God would be a sin.  Coveting your neighbor, also a thought that is a sin.

  • Being hated is just one price for speaking truth.

Judaism is much more like mysticism in that the innate code of morality is tied up in tradition and various moral codes.  The notions of there being such a thing as 'sin' in an absolute form or judgement after death are not really part of Judaism.
