"How Well Does It Hold Up?"
« on: Jun 08, 2012, 05:43:25 PM »
On last week's SGU, while the rogues were discussing re-consumption of media, a side conversation broke out about some of their favorite "classic" Sci-Fi films and how well they hold up compared to modern cinema, or at least fresh eyes. This got me thinking about some of my old favs, one being E.T. (I'm an eighties baby & this movie was pivotal to my future nerd-dom.)

One that I saw recently was Explorers, with River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke. This was my Jam when I was eight, and after re-watching it, IT'S STILL MY JAM.

I still like "The Last Starfighter"  >:D

Big Trouble in Little China is still awesome (or it was two years ago).

My middle school dress aesthetic was based primarily on The Crow, which holds up decently (I rewatched about a month ago).  Not great, but decent.

Stand By Me is great.

ETA: I saw you wanted Sci-Fi only.  Ooops.

Steve mentioned "Back to the Future" as holding up very well.

I agree. I watched most of the original and one of the sequels a few months ago. Didn't seem dated. Maybe because most of them don't take place present-day?

"Logan's Run" did not hold up at all.

Nor did "Westwood," "Andromeda Strain," or "Alien."

Basically, I think you have to get to the 1980's before Sci-Fi movies start holding up.  Then you get "Blade Runner," "Predator," "Cocoon," "E.T.," "The Thing," "Buckaroo Banzai," all the stuff that really held up (with the exception of the 1984 version of "Dune," obviously.)

And "Bill and Ted."

Pretty much, if it held up for more than 20 years, it came out in the 1980's.

I think alien and aliens are 2 of the best sci-fi films made. Add 2001, blade runner, the back to the future, the running man, and total recall.

Erm, I would also add soylent green and omega man.

Although I did wonder why in the future we'll return to using CRTs and pay phones.

It's not, necessarily, our future and it's not necessarily a future in which there is a linear progression of technology without any regression.

I watched Blade Runner without realising it was from the 80s. Very confused why the dystopian future was just around the corner, but it absolutely holds up.

I remember seeing this in the cinema when the 'present day' (Nov 5, 1985) was a few months into the future. That did my ten year old head in slightly. Watching it again now, because it jumps to a few different eras, the 80's just seems like another era, not necessarily representing 'right now'.

And the future future in the second movie is 2015!

I think they show a flat screen TV in that movie, too...though it may be a different movie.

During that film, Fox's character is surprised that Miami has beaten the  Chicago Cubs in the World Series (baseball)...specifically that there is a team.in Miami. As of this year, the Miami Marlins exist (formerly Florida Marlins).

Haha, true. Didn't pull me out of the moment, though.

I absolutely love the thick atmosphere of that movie.
