Unfairly preying on the gullible, mere novelty, or shrewd marketing move? Discuss.
I expect to pass through this world but once;
any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now;
let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

I think 'zombie' is becoming a euphemism for those in the prepper movement for anyone who isn't prepared for the coming collapse of society. Dehumanizing effort? Anyways, Glaser safety slugs are the way to go if you've got a handgun and you want to blow someones face off.

They're good self-defense rounds with extra-expensive marketing/packaging.

Hornady Critical Defense for me.  ;D

People buying these because of the drugged-out guy in Florida are certainly gullible.  However, these have been out for quite some time and I think they're a shrewd marketing move to jump on the zombie bandwagon (just look at all the zombie walks, zombie races, zombie-based video games, zombie movies, etc.) and the fact that firearms and zombies go hand in hand.  After all, an ammo manufacturer can't exactly jump on the Twilight movie craze except maybe with silver bullets.

For my money:
- novelty marketing
- they're just Hornady Critical Defense with a fancy color tip as I understand it
- really stupid move for anyone actually using these in a self-defense carry gun who actually has to use it as even if they were backed into a corner and about to die they're going to face a prosecutor who's going to have a field day making the person out to be a nut job out looking for "zombies" to kill.  Thus just something over-priced to show off to your buddies that you can spend more money on the same consumable product as they can like buying fancy bottled water vs. store-brand bottled water vs. tap water.

They're just regular polymer tip rounds marketed for kicks.

Good rounds though .... and fun for the entire family.

They are actually (if you compare the ballistic tables) one step down from Hornady Critical Defense (their top of the line man killers), with fancy marketing. So yeah, you are completely correct and if you were actually concerned with zombies or defense you would buy something else.

Hornady released their special Zombie ammunition before the recent drug-fueled cannibal attack -- long before, I think coinciding with season 2 of Walking Dead.

I didn't buy them (despite my lust for zombie blood and my love of all things ammunition) because, well, they're just a way to make more money for Hornady lol.

Why would you buy something else?

I bought a few boxes last Christmas as gag gifts for friends. I agree it would be foolish to use them for defense and then be forced to justify the use of "zombie killer" rounds in a trial. There is even a warning on the box that the rounds are not to be used for anything other than dispatching zombies. It's a joke, c'mon people.

Old news, dredged up by writers who don't mind ignoring linear time progression in order to make a better headline.  It is possible that sales of this existing product could have increased after the recent zombie news, but the article does not claim to know that.

IMO, these are a waste anyway because the best zombie gun is a 22 LR or maybe 22 mag, hopefully with a silencer.  Anything but a direct brain shot is wasted, and a 22 is good enough for that.  Larger calibers are unnecessary, will attract more zombies with their louder blast, and waste 2-3 times as much space/weight in your travel pack.  And if you are unfortunate enough to be facing more than one zombie at once, the lighter recoil of a 22 will make it easier to re-establish your site picture for the next crucial shot

Sure, if you want a gun designed by a committee with no real-world experience against zombies, the ZARWAWT AZG was a great gun.  I'll never understand people's obsession with all of these eastern European commie-era products.
