Strictly 4 My Niggaz by 2Pac is his best in my opinion. Not so much into the rest.

My favorite hip-hop is mostly (but not all) '90s era.

Top recommendations:
Ice Cube - pretty much all albums up to Lethal Injection where he started really going downhill for my taste.
The Notorious BIG - Ready to Die, fucking amazing record.
Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang, perfection.
NWA - especially Niggaz4Life
Aesop Rock - especially None Shall Pass
Beastie Boys - especially Paul's Boutique
Cypress Hill - first three records
Outkast

Worth checking out:
Method Man - Tical
Ol' Dirty Bastard - Return to the 36 Chambers
Public Enemy
Earl Sweatshirt
Eazy-E
Atmosphere - You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
Geto Boys have some good tracks
Nas
Obie Trice
The Pharcyde
Snoop Dogg
Spice-1
Dr Dre
Hail Mary Mallon
Ice T
50 Cent
GZA

I'm by no means an expert, but as someone who doesn't listen to too much hip-hop I can tell you what I like.

2pac is 90s gangster rap. It seems like Wu Tang, BIG, Ice Cube are good recommendations for that.

If you're interested in listening to pop rap I'd recommend:
Outkast - Aquemini
Kanye West - Graduation
Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon

A little harder to get into but I'd also recommend:
Das Racist - Sit Down, Shut Up

I'm not really into hip hop, but I would say that most of the rap that I enjoyed at a younger age was in the 90's.

To add to Plastique's list:

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

do you have any favorite instruments? ...piano, bass, acoustic guitar, drums ...some reason for me to pick one one song over another?

I'd be happy to spam you some songs from all over the map, but some idea of how to narrow it down might be best

btw, noticed your username, are you a fan of Jean Grae?

WHAT THE HECK PEOPLE!?!?!?!? No De La or Prince Paul yet!? Turn in your hipster cards!

Seriously though, De La Soul is greatness, as is Prince Paul's solo work (particularly Happy Boy Modeling School and Psychoanalysis: What Is It?).

Good suggestions thus far....

NWA was seriously hardcore.....even by today's standards.

I'll add some EPMD.

EPMD Crossover

FTFY (also wouldn't call HBMS "solo", since it is a giant collaboration)

Agreed 100% on Del La Sol.

For more hipster friendly hip hop, try:

Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030 (collaboration project with Del the Funky Homosapien, Dan the Automator and DJ Kid Koala)

The Roots - Phrenology

Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

I highley recommend Deltron 3030

Hmmm...

A Tribe Called Quest?

How about:

The Roots' Things Fall Apart is also awesome.

My all-time favorite hip-hop album is Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star, by Black Star.

Hmm, what was it, Bill Maher's show? Christopher Hitchens referring to Mos Def as "Mr Definitely", Jesus Christ that was funny.
