Help me identify a bone
« on: Jun 13, 2012, 06:41:31 AM »
OK, all you sciency folks out there. This vertebra was a decoration in a hostel I stayed in in Belgrade. Could you please help me identifying it. I made the amateur mistake of not using an everyday item for scale, but it was around 18-20 cm across. My guess is that it's probably a mammoth, but I'm not really sure.

There's, another example. See, here I'm now sitting by myself, uh, er, talking to myself. That's, that's chaos.

Homo habilis

It is a little known fact that homo habilis had one gigantic vertebra.

The one thing I can tell you is that because it is still bone and not a fossil it isn't a Dino.
common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Do you know how old it is?

Looks like the centrum of a cervical vertebra missing the rest of its processes (transverse process, pedicle, etc.). Or a part of the thicker part of a large whale's tail....

My guess would go to a mammoth or whale.

That would be nice. But don't go out of your way, I'm just curious.

Do you know how old it is?

No idea.
