Oatmeal/Funnyjunk thing has me thinking

It still sounds to me like you could swap out a couple words here and there (without really changing the overall meaning) in all of these arguments and instead of describing how horrible FJ is you're describing how horrible torrenting/filesharing/Pirate Bay is.

(I agree that what FJ does is terrible, it's just that many of the other folks I've heard decrying FJ are also avid/unapologetic torrenters.)

Oatmeal does the right thing in the eyes of these torrenters by providing his art for free. FJ is pissing on someone they like. Someone who "gets it".

Movie studios and record labels do it the wrong way, in their eyes, by DRMing their stuff and making everyone who's shared a file into criminals. They don't get it. They're old and outmoded. And when you piss off the pirates, they don't care about stealing from you. You are bad and it is morally RIGHT to steal from you.

The psychology is interesting.

I wonder how they would react to someone like Louie CK or Aziz Ansari getting torrented. These comedians get it, they offer their stuff on a pay-what-you-like non-DRM basis and have been rewarded with great sales, but they also must have been torrented by now and lost some money that way.

Have they lost money that way?  I know there are some people who just torrent everything, but those people probably would not pay for their stuff even if torrents did not exist.  People like me only use torrents to get stuff that I cannot get any other way, and we will go out of our way to support people like Louie CK within our entertainment budget.
