The Newsroom

lukebourassa:
Did anyone else watch Aaron Sorkin's latest show on HBO?

It definitely showcases his whip smart writing, but I also felt the pilot had it's ham-fisted, idealistic moments too (as The West Wing did.. but The West Wing could get away with it since it was on network TV, and was supposed to be uber patriotic).

I liked the episode in general. I just didn't like how this show will be potentially covering real events that happened in the recent past (the pilot deals with the oil spill in the Gulf).

Henning:
Liked it. For me, the show's mission was outlaid in Emily Mortimer's speech to Jeff Daniels on why the news is worth doing right. This will be Sorkin's shaming of the news media. And the news needs it, I believe this show needs to exist, so I will continue watching it.

They also set up the liberal vs libertarian thing, visions of what America could be... seems pretty liberal-slanted so far, so you know it appealed to me... but, hopefully Sorkin will write in an articulate, interesting libertarian at some point and it won't feel so much like I'm watching to see my own opinions echoed.

wastrel:
Haven't watched it yet but I plan to this weekend.

WW was a liberal echo chamber for the most part, and that's one of the things I loved about it.  I'd be fine with that angle here too, I think.

I was interested until you wrote that.  I really hate the "ripped from the headlines" shows.  Its always so ham fisted and writers always seem to change the real life story just enough to fit into whatever their world view is.   ???

Eternally Learning:
This is the only part I saw so far:

Newsroom speech

No idea what the structure of the show is, but the first part of the speech I really liked while the second part after explaining why America is not the greatest country in the world, but I really disliked the tired trope of "kids these days are lazy shits."  EVERY generation says that about the next and this generation is simply more informed, perhaps too informed whereas the last had very few voices telling them what to believe.

Anyhoo, if this really is about critiquing the media then I'm all for it.  That, to me, is one of the things that truly has decreased in quality since the last generation.
