What a fun episode, thank you! Although, I can't believe you guys didn't mention the Golgafrinchans from The Hitchhiker's Guide during your discussion of Prometheus. It't not a perfect parallel, but the Golgafrinchans send the most useless third of their population to crash land on Earth which in turn wipe out the natives and become the ancestors of modern humans.

Thanks again folks.

WTN starts at 53:45 and the new noisy is at 56:33.

Hmm .. music derived from something scientific .. wasn't someone a while back making music from DNA sequences? Time for a bit of YouTube searching I think.

All I could see between you and George Hrab tearing this film (Prometheus) up was an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000... Someone has to do it.

Given the ending of Lost there should be no surprise that Prometheus sucked. The reason is Damon Lindelof. He's someone who is ignorant of how science works but seems to be a little interested in it but at the same time he's obviously a theist and that gets in his way of actually understanding any of it.

Just watched the whole interview referenced in Whose That Noisy. It was... really difficult to watch.

I think the Noisy is Tau, although that is partially based on the fact that Tau Day was this week.  Do I answer here?

Yes... if you mean the alternate to Pi day.

The bit about time slowing down was reported in New Scientist 21 Dec 2007

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19626354.000-is-time-slowing-down.html

(not sure if you have to login or not to see this link.)

It seems like an analogue to MOND as an alternative to Dark Matter.    I wonder if anyone is working on unifying MOND and Time Slowing to come up with a unified alternative to both Dark Matter and Dark Energy?    .... or is MOND completely dead now that folks are mapping the distribution of Dark Matter?  How a bout a quickie with Brian Greene to sort all this out for us?  :)

Re: Prometheus:  One possible reason for the crew to be clueless idiots is that they were "hand picked" by an elderly billionaire.  Imagine what sort of crew would have been hand picked by Howard Hughes near the end of his life.

Maybe the movie is a subtle ploy to improve science education going by the number of science bloggers pointing out the scientific errors.  ::)
