Deleted Accounts Policy Suggestion
Plastique:
Recent events suggest this might be a good discussion, although I'm looking at this without all the facts, so could be off base.
Members are the lifeblood of any forum—basically the more, the merrier. We've lost a few reasonably prominent ones lately, and I think a lot of value should be placed on avoiding this (obviously short of allowing contravention of the code of conduct). Not to vilify anyone, but I'm wondering whether management is too eager to delete people's accounts when they request it in the heat of the moment. As such, I'd tentatively suggest a mandatory cooling off period following an account deletion request, perhaps 48 hours.

I think the right thing to do in that situation was move the thread to explicit. I don't think issuing an ultimatum was a good idea.
DonA1979:
If I recall correctly from similar discussions in the past, Beleth doesn't actually delete accounts. He moves them to a deleted users group.
Belgarath:
As far as I know, I think they are just moved and could be recovered on request.
Kwisatz Haderach:
I agree that in many cases a cooling off period would be a good idea, but I would not second-guess the moderator's decisions without reasons. We don't all know the whole story, what sort of PMs had been exchanged, what sort of warnings had been privately issued in the past, etc...
But in general, I agree with your basic premise that it is better to try to keep members.
(Even the annoying ones)
(Which many people probably think I am one of).
