One of the giants of jazz, not mentioned yet (I think) was Thelonious Monk, just amazingly cool and weird. His best known composition is "Round Midnight", but he has lots of other good stuff, both originals and standards. Oh, and apparently the whole documentary "Straight, No Chaser" about Monk (produced by Clint Eastwood) is on YouTube, too: Thelonious monk Straight No Chaser

Essential watching/listening for all jazz fans.
