Doesn't sound like he won that. He sounds like a dick and he apologizes like a little boy.

unless you know his style and his material.

even Steven Novella sounds like a dick if you just quote something mean he says about psychics and can't hear his style/tone

I agree his tone is kinda joking but he really does seem like an ass a lot of the time. Not only that but unlike similar programs (south park) I've seen kids at school (those considered the popular douchebags) acting just like him to actual people in a non-joking manner.

and some guys think they're god's gift to women, like the character Anthony Jeselnik portrays satirically in his stand-up act... but that doesn't mean that's who he is, just that that's the style of comedy that he's able to do well.

I'm not going to say that any material should be off limits for jokes, but some topics take more skill than others and I don't think Tosh has the requisite skill level for this one.  This also seems to violate the unwritten rule that you don't joke about something related to a minority group you don't belong to.

Apologizes like a little boy?

I, for one, have never heard a little boy apologize for anything.

really? a parent can force a child to feel small and obliged to apologize for something.

if Tosh was under a lot of social pressure to cave, rather than stand up for what he did, the analogy would be quite solid.

Granted, I don't hang around little boys all that often, but that's a massive assumption you're making. Why assume that he was pressured and didn't just simply decide that he was in the wrong? Just because a comedian acts like a dick on stage, doesn't mean they're dicks in real life. Comedians call it an "act" for a reason.

I'm just playing devil's advocate for the analogy

I don't really understand how people find comedians offensive.

Jim Jefferies was at the Atheist con earlier this year and told a fairly long and slightly bornig joke that ends with "but i could never be gay, not because I don't like guys, but because I couldn't f**k anyone I respect".

It got quite a backlash, people calling him sexist and all that. I was stunned, people don't ACTUALLY believe he "thinks" that do they? He's making a JOKE, he's not telling his life story, it's called irony. If people actually thought that, they wouldn't laugh, they'd say: "ain't that the truth brother"..

The reason you laugh is precisely because it is preposterous and uncomfortable and maybe shocking and you can't believe someone said it on stage and maybe most of all, that maybe there ARE people in the world who actually DO believe that. But I don't for one second think the person on the stage is one of them.

"Is rape ever funny?" is a question a lot like "Is cutting into a living brain ever safe?"

In the hands of someone with the right experience and skill, sure, it can be. But most people don't have anywhere near that level of skill. And it's clear that Daniel Tosh does not.
I expect to pass through this world but once;
any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now;
let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

so it's clear from a surgeon's one screw-up that he has never been able to perform surgery safely for decades prior to the screw-up?

maybe it's only the improptu surgery and rape jokes that they're not skilled enough to perform...

I don't mind when the word is used in a competitive setting, discussing someone's dominance, or in jest between friends. I think jokes about the topic specifically are in bad taste and I can't recall ever finding it funny.

Regarding the Tosh quotes, that bit knocks him down a few pegs in my eyes. It's juvenile in an unfunny and non-ironic way, and the opposite of what I would consider comedy. It's like something I would expect to hear at an 8th grade lunch table. I understand what he was trying to do, with the whole "you should never get angry at a joke, make light of it all" thing, but he just isn't smart enough to pull it off.
