Skeptress:
Reading a book (House of Leaves) that challenges my vocabulary and keeping a list to define as I go. Here are the first five. Post your answers as a spoiler. In a few days I'll tell the winner and give another set of five. No fair using a dictionary! I used dictionary.com for my definitions.
In this set there are some words that have more than one definition. Have fun!

(click to show/hide)Iron pyrite is fools's gold I think, so
pyritic = 5) the ability to create a spark; having the qualities of fool's gold.
I know that
neologism = 4) a new word or phrase or the introduction thereof
and probably also 2) a new word that only the speaker understands.
I guess
amaurotic = 3) partial or total loss of sight, especially in the absence of a gross legion or injury.
moither = 1) to talk in a rambling or confused manner
and 7) to bother or bewilder.
chechaquo -or- cheechaco = 6) tenderfoot; greenhorn; newcomer
and 8 ) a new doctrine.

I'd heard of hmm, maybe two of those, but the structure of the words seemed helpful in assigning definitions. By the way, should number three read "gross lesion" in stead of "gross legion"?
