Alternate History - Revelations

(1/4) > >>

Anders:
Apparently there were plenty of people at Nicea who didn't want Revelations included in the Bible, since they thought it read like the ravings of a madman. How would history be different if they had carried the day?

Shibboleth:
I don't know how much Revelations has dictated policy. The Orthodox use much of Revelations for symbolism in their service but most of our theology isn't based on Revelations.... especially since most of Revelations was about Nero.

Other than saying that without Jesus we wouldn't have had Paul, I would say that the single most important person in how the western civilization developed was Paul.

Skepdad:
Well, the many fundamentalists I know and knew got much of their motivations from Revelations. It serves to fan the flames of Hellfire and Brimstone sermons and the promise of an afterlife where the streets were paved of gold - gold so pure it was a clear as glass. In other words it is pretty damned important and probably served as an important instrument of shaping the Southern Baptists.

Halleyscomet/Wakefield:
Israel would not exist as a nation today.

Israel exists largely because the US and Great Brittan made it so. While a desire for a canned allay in the Middle East was one motive, it wouldn't have happened, and support certainly wouldn't continue today, if not for the End Times folks who believe a Jew controlled Holy Land is a prerequisite for Armageddon.

Really? That is what you are going with...?
