I remember loving "Oz".  I was dismayed when I tried to get my wife to watch Oz how poorly that show has aged.  Oof.
Well.  There it is.

I came on here to do a search for 'Deadwood' to see what people had had to say about it. And here you all are discussing it currently. I'm watching it for the first time and I'm HOOKED. It's wonderful!  The Wire is still my best though.

I'm currently 3 episodes into "Show Me A Hero", an HBO docudrama from a few years ago about building housing projects in Yonkers, New York.  It's fantastic so far, assuming that you accept "soul crushing" as a positive characteristic of a television show.

Since talking about blatant racism and mob rule aspects of the show will put me in a foul mood, I'll just praise the acting instead:

- Oscar Isaac (X-men movie aside) can do no wrong
- Catherine Keener has the guts to actually play a woman her own age
- Jim Belushi somehow looks like a serious actor for one episode
EDIT - my theory that every good HBO show has a Seinfeld extra in it somewhere is proven doubly right, as both actors that portrayed the president of NBC share several scenes

A couple new shows are worth giving a try. Sneaky Pete on Amazon follows the story of a con artist who is released from prison and adopts the identity of his cell mate in order to avoid his past life. Giovanni Ribisi does a good job in the title role, as does Bryan Cranston (also one of the show's creators) as the gangster after Pete.

Also from Amazon, Red Oaks follows the story of a young student working as a tennis pro at the prestigious and exclusive Red Oaks Country Club during the summer between his sophomore and junior years of college (NYU) in the 1980s.

Riverdale (Netflix s01e01) seriously impressed / 10

Wow.

This is a very clever and interesting take on what Archie would be like IRL. It's a 90210-style soap opera with intrigue, murder, secrets and so on. The 4-colour versions of the characters you remember from the comics are still there - but then they start adding depth and detail and wow.

The exposition is a bit heavy in the first 20 minutes or so, but settles in quite nicely. So far only one of the primary characters is unidimensional - Betty's mom. Everyone else shows real depth.

Started Halt and Catch Fire recently. Felt the first season was a bit weak- still engaging but felt kind of soul-less and detached. I have heard each season improve on itself, so I'm eager to see that.

I also started re-watching Pushing Daisies and it's an absolute crime that that show got cancelled. It is brilliant. And makes me vomit rainbows.

Speaking of Brian Fuller shows that never should have been canceled... may I introduce you to Dead Like Me...

Yup, saw that one too. :)

Total crime for it to get shit-canned.

I actually own Wonderfalls as well.

Why is it the only Bryan Fuller show that didn't bomb (for the most part) was Hannibal and that show was p a i n f u l to watch. WHY.

Dead Like Me was screwed over when showtime got a new CEO.  The new guy didn't like the show, they made some changes that made the show worse, so viewership dropped, and then they cancelled it.  Season 1 is one of my favorite seasons of any series.  Very few shows really stayed with me like that one, I would think about episodes for days, even weeks at a time after I watched them.

Brain Games

Anyone familiar with this show?
It's definitely a winner in a science/skepticism way I would think.
My kids absolutely love it. Lots of information about how our brains work and how our brains DON'T work.

What's cool is they use illusionists and magicians quite often to illustrate how our brains get deceived so easily.

It's been on Netflix for some time (it's from the National Geographic network), but I think some of the seasons will be coming off this month.
