Cause we were barely seventeen And we were barely dressed
« on: April 20, 2016, 09:33:12 PM »
I was going through the forumvision thread looking for something else, and listened to Paradise by the dashboard light just for the fun of it, and there is something that totally bothers me. Now in my experience, and I was 9 when this song came out so it would take a while before I got to this level of experience. But why in 1977 was there a girl, who was 17 and barely dressed asking;

"Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy
For the rest of my life?
Will you take me away
And will you make me your wife?"

Really?!? was the "summer of love" over? had Gloria Steinem not taken hold of the feminine mystique

and then what the hell kind of answer is "Let me sleep on it." when you're in the backseat of a car "parking by the lake"? .....

It was long ago and it was far away,
And it was so much better than it is today.

He's basically saying.  "Let's worry about that later, right now let's get busy".

Ironically my wife and I were listening to this song tonight coming home from the restaurant.

Maybe cos she's young and naive or confused?
First I heard the song was good ol' Forumvision, and I took the song for absurd humor. It is absurd to plan your whole "happily ever after" by the light of the dashboard. She wants a relationship, and is naive enough to think this is where it happens. He wants to fuuuuuuck (Lemme sleep on it = Sure baby, let's just bone  for now and I'll let you know in the morning *wink). Same stereotypes as it ever was.

There was a period after rape wasn't okay anymore and before sleeping around was standard practice where withholding sex was a source of power in relationships and courting for women.  This transition is more recent than some believe and in some religious communities has not yet occurred.  Why then would this song be out of place?
I agree with Clunn, which makes me feel all weird inside.

As an aside, I'm kind of related to the brunette vixen in the video, Karla DeVito:

They're still married after many decades, and have two lovely children.

And now I'm praying for the end of time.

Ironically my wife and I were listening to this song tonight coming home from the restaurant.

On purpose, or it just happened to be on the radio?

First I heard the song was good ol' Forumvision,

Wow! That surprises me, I thought that this was a cultural staple, are you familiar with the tune Stairway to heaven?

Why then would this song be out of place?

You are absolutely right, That is exactly the context I was looking for.

As an aside, and I'm kind of related to the brunette vixen in the video, Karla DeVito:

By the way, in the background of the last photo I posted is a poster of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast".

Robbie was the voice of the Beast, which I never would have guessed - many of his roles were a little on the "milquetoast" side, and its hard for me to envision him voicing the Beast.

I read or heard somewhere that Stienem was basically a big nerd in HS and this song was about what his adolescent self imagined a night with the most popular girl at school would have been like.

If I remember correctly the baseball announcer in the song had no idea what the song was going to be about when he agreed to do it.

tmead, I am so glad to see that you've been a registered member since Feb. 2015 and it took a thread about Meatloaf's teenage fantasies, that I may have started when I was a little tipsy,  to finally get you to post.  ;D

What are we talking about exactly?

Well it's kind of a combination of Paradise, dashboard lights, and Ice Castles.

Just roll with it.
