What music reliably gives you chills?
« on: July 05, 2016, 02:28:31 AM »
The latest episode (#573) inspired me to start this topic since I have a few songs that at certain points almost always give me the chills.  I thought it'd be kinda cool to catalog all the different songs that give us chills and see how others react as well.  I figure the format of this thread would just be to post a song and list the timestamp of where you typically get the chills.  For my first video and an example, here's Apocalyptica's cover of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica:

Reliably? I'd say some live devotional future soul rnb jazz normally does it, like this....

I freak when those drums come in towards the end.

Sorry to hog this thread. Two from the Beta Band.

The moment the vocals kick in really:

2:02 - "And when I wake in the morning and I look through my window and I see sun sky sand sea would you fill your life with me":

Right, I'd better get on with some work.

Tool, Tool and ummmm Tool.
Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer is the master of recognizing the effect his music has on people. Some of his message may be a little spiritual, however, his desire to understand the unknown is a real driving force. His song duet Parabol and Parabola (songs that often give me chills) try to bridge the gap of human experience. My most poignant moment of chills, however, comes in the song Lateralus, near the end of the song the bass and drum syncopation becomes focused and the lyrics are as follows:

"I embrace my desire to, I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral, to swing on the spiral,
to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out.
I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me.
Whatever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out. Keep going..."

Without fail when I am tune with this part of this song I get chills almost choreographed to the "feel it move across my skin" lyric. I believe that this is an intentional effect implemented by the composition of the music and lyrics.

Almost anything coming out of Mongolia these days. Tenegger Cavalry, Altan Urag, a couple rap groups, and the traditional stuff. Altan Urag does a lot of the music for the "Marco Polo" series on Netflix (is it originally a Showtime show?) and I went down the youtube trail on that. The performers on Asia's got talent blow me away while keeping it very traditional, very Inner Mongolia.

Played on Radio 6 music this afternoon, not heard this cover before. So melancholic.
