Pokemon Go
« on: July 07, 2016, 01:15:54 AM »
I note that there are/were number of Ingress players around the place, I was wondering whether those with a nostalgic turn of mind had heard of, or joined, Pokemon Go.

A colleague mentioned it (an augmented reality game) via ones mobile phone, when one is on a quest to find all of the Pokemon.

I am curious as to whether other are playing...

I never played Pokemon (I was born too early), and while I dabbled with Ingress for a bit, it never really grabbed me. But I might be tempted to give PG a go.

I played the beta, got in as an Ingress player.
It was fun for a little while catching all the pokemon, but so far thats about all there is to the game. I feel like its very lacking in depth. The story, player vs player and tactical battling is all removed / not yet implemented compared to the "real" pokemon games. Ill be curious to see if they add more features and sections of the game or not.

Walk around; pokemon show up nearby; flick the screen to throw a pokeball at it (similar to that facebook basketball game). Thats mostly it.

At work today a coworker requested a specific booth at a restaurant because it was apparently an unclaimed gym.  The obsession is not merely for the kids it seems.

I've been playing it and enjoying it quite a bit. My dog loves it too. I take her on lots of extra walks now.

I don't know how long it will keep my attention, but for now it's taking the place of some of my other time wasters, and forcing me to go for walks instead of wasting my time on the couch.

My son is into this game. It gets him active/moving so I'm all for it.

A lot of pidgey and those stupid bats around. Interestingly, taking the dog for a walk is not fruitful, a 40 minute 4+km walk will result in me seeing one or two Pokemon.

I think they have the same issue as with Ingress, playing outside of a densely populated area is disproportionately difficult. However, unlike ingress that is based on population control, it seems odd that Pokemon are so rare in parks.

Eta: the app also readily forgets your options (i.e sound off).

Also, has a lot of trouble processing gym battles. Regularly freezes, forgets results and resets mid battle. I suspect it's an issue assosciated with the resources. Yesterday I won my 10 gym wins badge, having never had a battle and without it freezing (whether I'd won or lost), and having never seen a gym change control.

Pokemon tend to hang around stuff, and not out in parks.
