Explaining what a podcast is?
« on: July 12, 2016, 08:43:49 PM »
How would explain what a podcast is to somebody who has no idea what they are?
I have been trying to explain it to my sister and don't know an easy way to explain it.

how old is she ? what does she understand about the internet ?
Depending on the answers, it may be more or less complicated to make a proper analogy... "like a radio show, but that can be listened to anytime", " could b a base.

Radio shows you can download off the internet and listen to whenever you want.  You can subscribe to them like magazines and then you'll be told when a new one is available.

Trouble kind of is for me that Radio Shows always make me think of Rush Limbaugh and his ilk.
Also some of the podcasts I listen to are history podcasts.

I've used the radio show analogy with my parents. It seemed to work okay, especially after I explained how easy it is to focus on very specific niche subjects because of the potential global reach.

Free audio programs distributed over the internet where you typically subscribe and/or download through some piece of software that makes it easy, like gpodder.  They run the gamut from audio books, to college lectures, to regular radio show fare, to niche talk show topics like technology, Buddhism, biology, current events, etc.

They're free, easy and quite popular.

Portable DVR for radio, with many people self-producing shows.

"Like a radio version of youtube" is my go-to.

I mean to add that her experience on the internet seems to be Facebook, mainly grand children pictures, and maybe buying something on Amazon.

Conversation between me and my Mammogy professor:

Me: You should listen to it. It's great podcast.

Prof: What's a podcast?

Me: It's an audio, kinda radio, show that you can download from the Internet.

Prof: Are they Ted Talks?

Me: no, but there is a podcast for Ted Talks called Ted Radio hour.

Prof: Where do you get these pod hours?

Me: Podcasts? From the iTunes or any other website where you can download podcast audio.

Prof: is it a Ted Talk?
