Greg Graffin from Bad Religion would be a great interview!
« on: January 29, 2008, 10:51:44 PM »
The punk rock band Bad Religion has been waving the flag for skeptics and atheists everywhere since the early 80's, when they were a bunch of scrappy kids railing against TV evangelists and the moral majority. The whole band is a group of free thinkers whose passion for music-with-a-message is unequaled(in my opinion.) Their front-man Greg Graffin takes the cake though--he earned a PhD from Cornell in Evolutionary Biology and teaches science at UCLA when he isn't touring and writing. I mean, how many punk rockers with over 20 years of music under they're belt AND a PhD do you know? Bad Religion has been an inspiration for me my whole life, they are positive, intelligent and very relevant...please consider an attempt(at least) to contact Mr. Graffin to see if he could be interviewed for the show. I think your panel and your audience would find him very interesting, I know I would. Well, thanks for your consideration and keep up the great work!

Best,
MikeD.

You didn't put as an option "I have a friend that loves bad religion but I don't like their music so much. Even so, I'd like to hear them on the pod-cast as I've heard they're bright guys."  :D

I love Bad Religion.  I always wondered if they were into the whole Conspiracy Camp though.

Greg Graffin is definitely a hugely smart dude.  I watched an old video of an interview with him.  They asked what he would do if he had a million dollars.  Whereas most people would say "buy a house" or whatever, his response was, "I would start a biological research facility."

Yeah, that video is from their european tour dvd in the late 80's or early 90's. Its funny to see footage of them when they were that young, now they have receeding hair lines...make no mistake though, they are just as relentless, just as scathing, and like I said before, relevant. Lots of people just don't like punk music in general, and that's cool, but instead those ppl. should check out Greg's solo music--it's like folk/americana, with a very scratchy, earthy feel to it:http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=83961641...I just really think it'd be cool for SGU to track him down and get some good words in.

That's a gret idea for an interview!

Here's a recent interview with Greg Graffin from the Cornell Evolution Project:

Perspectives From Evolutionary Biology

I cannot second this idea hard enough.

I've been a BR fan for years and years, and it's hard to think of any group I like more. Graffin would be a most excellent interview; the topic could be, say, skepticism in popular culture, or perhaps balancing a scientific career with something else like an artistic pursuit. Or you could just ask him why he's SO DAMN AWESOME.

Just last month Harvard presented Greg Graffin with the
2008 Cultural Humanism Award. I found out about it from a Skepchick link, here is another one:

Bad Religion is just such an awesome band!...the fact that Greg is a big science geek is icing on the cake. I make a point to listen to them everday!

Good idea, they should ask him why all their songs sound the same...

Beleth Whoops!  This forum should have been read-only.
It is now.
Please suggest this interview in the Podcast Interview Suggestions thread.

let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
